Thumbs up Exciting news about the StopTech rear 13" brake kit.

Today I had a good chat with my engineering manager regarding our forthcoming 13" rear kit for the Z. Here's where things stand...
It is looking more and more likely that we will be able to use a 328x28mm rear rotor on the car. Why is this a good thing you ask...because that is more than ample from a heat capacity perspective, without carrying around added weight. The track model rear Brembo is a 332x22, so the 328x28 should have significantly more heat capacity. This kit will enable the use of 17" wheels for track/autoX/drag, etc.

Now for the even better news...if we can pull off using the smaller rotor, we are fairly that we will be able to price the rear kit under $2000. That means that we will be able to offer our 'smaller' 4 wheel kit for under $4000. It would consist of the current 332mm front kit, and our new 2 piston billet aluminum rear caliper and rotor discussed above. I'm hoping we can get the price down to $3895 or $3995 for the 4 wheel kit. Current 332mm front kit owners will be able to add the rear kit on for $1895 or $1995, and it will work perfectly without any modifications.

My best guess at a release date is some time in May. I'm hoping for sooner, but I think that is a fairly safe estimate.

Ye ask, and ye shall receive...

Thanks for the update...that's great news! I have one minor thing to point out, though...the Track Brembo rear rotor is 322, not 332, so at 328 * 28, the StopTech rear will be even bigger, wider (and hopefully better at dissipating heat) than the Track rear.

Keep up the good work.

What about a rear addition to those of us that have the 14" front kit. (Kit was absolutely amazing at VIR full last weekend!)

mcclaskz: If you have a 14" kit in the front you really do not need the rear kit. Unless you just want the bling-bling factor.

It's well documented that the rear BBKs are mainly for show and probably don't add a whole lot of performance.... at least not on the order of magnitude of going from the OEM non-Brembo to the 14" kit. Unless you have a manually adjustable brake biasing system and you want to run more rear bias for different performance characteristic, then this kit is ideal.

J Ritt: thanks for the update! You realize that by posting this information, all the people who whined about the cost are now going to whine again that it is too much... and they are going to hold you to this price. While the true enthusiasts know what goes into engineering a maximum performance system will appreciate the updates, many others will expect something for nothing. Very brave of you, but very much appreciated.

Now, when the heck are we gonna see Stoptech AeorRotors for the OEM Brembos!!! You make a set and I will buy them.

Cheers all,

PeteH

Mr J Ritt,

Thanks for the update. Quick question: what kind of pad are you using in the rear 13" caliper? Based on my quick and dirty analysis (a couple of runs at Watkins Glen with immediate pyrometer measurement of the rotor temps upon coming in) the rear rotors are not completely overheating. They are getting hot - but within the acceptable temp range of my pads. The main problem is that the rear non-brembo pads are so small that they only last about ~300 track miles. So, I'm curious about what you guys will put back there.

Gary...yes, the rear is a 322x22...that was a typo. Yes, significantly more heat capacity in a 328x29.

McclaskZ...we already have a 4 wheel 14" kit! The calipers are different in front on the 14" 2 wheel and 14" 4 wheel kit though, so you can't add them on. You would need to sell the front only kit and buy the 4 wheel. Audito350Z is right...I think you should be just fine from a performance standpoint with the 355mm front kit. Our World Challenge cars ran 322mmx22 front rotors last year with no problems. They are a little lighter than a z, but also faster...velocity is the key here.

McclaskZ...I'm glad you liked the brakes at the track. They definitely make it a lot more fun when you don't have to worry about babying them like the stockers...you just fly in and hammer them.

I know...some people will cry no matter what you do. I also know that there are plenty of people that are reasonable and do appreciate these updates. It's worth a little pain and suffering.

We are taking a serious look at this right now. I don't know...I'd call it 50/50 chance of happening at this point. We have a LOT of stuff going on here now!

Jason Bourne,
The pad shape will be identical to the rear Brembo's on the Track Z. The race pad setup I will use when this kit is released will be the PFC 01 or 97 in front (depending on street or R compound tires...97 if street tires, 01 if R), and the PFC 97 rear. This will be THE hot setup IMO.

How big is the rear track edition pad? I haven't seen it - can someone give me a reference compared to either the stock rear pad or the regular caliper StopTech pad?

larger than the non-Brembo rear pad (I've never seen one, so I can't be more specific)

about 2/3rds the size of the front pad in a Stoptech ST40 caliper... going from memory, about 9cm or 10cm wide and 5cm or 6cm tall

About a year ago I was trying to convince Bob to offer OEM Brembo replacements. You'd definitely have a buyer here!

Any news on these? My car is getting fat on a steady diet of stock rear brake pads...

Rear 2 piston kits will be trickling out very, very soon. We already have a bunch of orders for them. If you want one any time soon, I'd suggest placing your order asap with one of our authorized resellers. Price on the rear is $1795.

Also, the Brembo replacements are supposed to ship from our foundry at the end of the month. The first couple of sets were run on the Unitech Racing 350Z's last weekend at Mid-Ohio in the Grand Am Cup, and captured a win and a third place on their maiden outing! The team drivers were extremely pleased with the rotors. I will post pictures of these with weights next week.
