Default Question about the Nismo Performance Damper

For those who have installed the Nismo Performance Damper as a kit. I bought a used rear Nismo damper and checked with the seller about its previous usage. I bought it used because I understood the product enough that it can be adapted to other vehicles due to the threaded end connecting a rod to the damper itself. I notice I can compress and pull the assembly without it retracting back. Is it supposed to return back to its original position or does piston move independently to rest at a different position?

It is a damper, not a gas charged shock absorber...so i would think it is functioning correctly....i run steering dampers on my motorcycles, they are designed to have things move at a controlled rate....not push or pull.
