Question Does ur ABS work??? I lock and skid under hard braking...normal??

It has happened two times. Both times I hit the brakes HARD (from about 60 the 1st time and 45 the 2nd time) and after about 2-3 secs of grind (abs I think) she locks and skids.

First time I wrecked. Second time I was able to swerve around the *** that pulled out on me .

I thought ABS was supposed to keep lock up from occurring, not just minimizing.

thoughts???

thanks

Didn't you put spacers on? It could be adversely affecting the ABS sensors...

I have braked hard pushing the brakes to their limits many times, while doing autocross and track days on a real track. ABS works perfectly. In fact, our ABS is superior because it does each wheel independently of the others. I have felt the effects of this and can confirm that it works well.

You might get your system checked.

Thanks Buub. It is hard to get any dealer to even do an oil change now that my front lip is so low. I am not sure if this makes any difference in hell, but I have stock brakes.?????

John - This happened b4 and after spacers.

what diameters are your front and rear tires? if you have diameters that are out of spec stagger-wise from stock, the ABS system is being fooled and is locking your brakes prematurely. stock front diameter is 25.97". Stock rear diameter is 26.68" for a rear to front stagger 'factor' of 1.02734. IIRC, this number should not be deviated by more than = or - 5%, no matter what size tires you are running.

I've never had a problem with the stock brakes OR with hawk pads on either the track or the street. Only thing I can think of is once I braked a little hard into a turn and the back end started to come around (VDC off), but that was my fault, not the brakes...

If you have clearance issues for oil changes, then PM me if you need places to go to. Did you have your car aligned after you swapped suspensions? Hell, my dealer is still able to go oil changes, and my front end is pretty damn low. The key is that they use the right lift. If you need an alignment, that's another matter...

i have done lots of panic braking tests on lots of different cars. the same car will not lock up on one test and then lock one or more on the next test. usually one of the rear wheels will lock, since most cars have an ABS sensor for the entire rear axle, and as long as one is still rolling, it doesn't care. that being said, i have never fully locked a tire in the Z. i have done some serious braking, and the ABS always comes through.

i would recommend getting it checked, but unless the computer has kicked a code that tells them what to do, good luck actually having anyone do anything about it.

What are you basing this assumption on? The fact that your tires are howling under full ABS braking? Do you lose all steering control under full braking?

I was recently at a seminar on ABS and dynamic stability control system design and one of the things we learned is that tires will howl when under only a 10% slip rate. In other words, it will feel and sound like your wheels are locked up, but they aren't. If, on the other hand, you totally lost the ability to steer around an object while under full braking, then perhaps your ABS does have a problem. Time to talk to the dealer and have some diagnostics performed.
