Is OEM Navigation Worth It?
Hi all. I'm about to get an '06 Grand Touring and am debating whether to get the OEM NAV or go aftermarket. So, this is not a question about whether or not to get NAV, rather, I'm sold on NAV based on the experience with my wife's car's system. My questions really about how good the Nissan NAV is. First, I believe they modified the NAV system for 06 but I'm not sure. In any case, my criteria are basically: functionality, speed (e.g., when recalculating a route, etc.), ease of use of the interface, integration with the audio system (i.e., is any part of the BOSE audio system controllable via the NAV screen, do the voice commands go through the audio system speakers, does the NAV mute the audio system when voice commend is being spoken, etc.). Also, on the aftermarket-side of things, are there installation kits available for mounting a touch screen, say Alpine, in the stock location? Thanks...

I'd just go with a stock nav if I could do it again. Then I'd have buttons on the dash right below the screen (rather than an annoying remote control like I have with the aftermarket unit).
I found this in this thread about regrettable aftermarket modifications.

It's post 105.
Hope this helps.

Yes, the Nav voice goes through the Bose system to the speakers and it mutes the music during that time. If you plan on replacing Bose, it is considerably more work with factory Nav.
That said, yes, I AM getting OEM Nav on my '06 GT, and yes, I WILL replace Bose in week 1. I like the Z Nav's new layout as well as the GUI upgrades for this year. Besides, I'm a sucker for niceties like service reminders!

2 things I'll never do:
1) buy a new car (unless I hit the lottery)
2) buy OEM nav units.
With the newer SiRF chipsets hitting the market, and awesome performance from the latest units from Tom Tom, Garmin, and Magellan, there is zero reason to spend more for less performance / features from any OEM unit.
The Nissan OEM unit sucks compared to the Honda / Acura units as well.
I seriously advise saving that money and using it for useful mods.
