Default Tax Title and License

Can someone explain this a little. First time buying a new car. What exactly do I need to pay the dealer when I buy the car. Say the final price on the car is 28,500 and Tax is 2250. Is this all I pay the dealer. Final price plus tax, then pay the title and license to the DMV?

Thanks in advance.

You can get some realistic numbers at carmax.com.

a. price of vehicle
b. state sales tax
c. Documentation fee (this may include vehicle registration and new tags)

Thanks. I know that the tax will be around $2625 to $2875 on a 28K purchase. Question is do I pay the dealer this amount or the DMV when I register the vehicle? How does that work??

as far as I am aware, everything is paid to the dealer and they take care of distributing the stuff. General rule of thumb i believe is 10-11% of purchase price = ttl

Usually you pay the dealer, and the dealer takes care of the documentation.

The dealer will even transfer your plates from your trade-in to your new car, etc. It's all pretty painless. Just call your insurance agent and get your Z added to your policy, preferably before you pick it up.

Depends on where you live. Some states (like where I live in Nevada), the plates are not transferrable to another vehicle.

But otherwise, yeah, the dealer takes care of all that most of the time and it is negotiable. When I paid for my Z, my dealer covered my registration fees.

Please elaborate on that (anyone) as I was actually wondering about the same issue since I've never owned a new car myself either. But if all it is, is tax and title fees, how can that be negotiable? I mean, isn't tax a fixed % of a new car's price, and title fees are fixed too?

No you cannot negotiate your TT&L... unless someone wants to go to jail for not paying their tax. You can however get the dealership to drop the price of the car to compensate for your TT&L, but if you get to that point that they can afford to do that and you don't have to kick and screem to get them to do it... then they're making money off of you and you probably did not do very well in the negotiations. The best and only real thing to do is to negotiate price of the vehicle. Don't worry about payment, don't worry about the trade in value, and don't worry about taxes: Payment- if you get the price right and you're not an idiot, then the payment will work out to where it needs to be. Trade in Value - if you want more for your car all they're going to do is "overallow" and drop the price of the car in the computer and show you you're getting more for your car(in which case they can't go as low on the price). Tax - Uncle Sam will allways get his part...period. You can pay it up front or you can roll it into your note. Rule of thumb - For every $1000 financed it's $20-$25 worth of payment with good credit. Sorry for the long post... if you've got any other questions shoot me a pm.

Thanks. That's why it wasn't making any sense to me. I read it wrong. Yes, I'm getting a great deal on the car (invoice plus no labor on Nismo ad ons).

Make sure you factor insurance too after your OTD (out the door) price of your car.
