Default Question on buying from private seller

I am at North Cal. I am trying to purchase a used Z. If I buy from craigslist's individual seller or something like that, do I need to pay around 10% tax like you buy from dealership?

I asked many seller, they all have different answers. I am trying to not paying the tax.

Any one has experience on that?

Thanks.

The way it works here in Texas is:

Say the owner is asking for 19k. You cut him a check for 19k and he or the bank gives you the title. You submit for a title transfer to the DMV. They take account of the sales price of 19k and charges TTL to switch the car to your name. You do not pay the owner the tax.

You don't pay the private-party seller any tax.

But, you have to pay a "use tax" to the DMV. The use tax rate varies depends on your county of residence.

This is true.. I bought my Z off of craigslist and paid the cost straight to the seller and had to pay the sales tax when I registered the car with the DMV. Sucks! but its got to be done. One thing you could do is have the seller put in writing that he sold it to you for less money so that you only have to pay taxes on the lower price. Wish I had thought about that before I registered mine!

^ Oh yea forgot about that. The amount that you will be taxed on is the amount written in the title, when the seller fills that in to transfer the title to you.

Every state that I know of determines the tax either from their own rate schedule, or from some pricing service like KBB. It is pretty unlikely that you will avoid any taxes by misstating the transaction price.

As a buyer pulled something similar to this with me, my wife had the definitive after the fact response:

Sorry I don't know you well enough to commit a felony.

I am at North Cal, so how much would the tax be? around 10%?
Couple hundred dollars is okey to me, but I really don't want to pay like 10%.

If I asked seller to write a lower price, will it affect the price I sell this car in the future?

P.S. I would say DMV is the richest department of all federal department. They already make money on every car since people bought brand new from dealership. They are making money again and again when it's being sold as used.
