Default Buying a 350z... use VPP or negotiate?

Hi all-

First time posting... I'm hoping to buy a 2007 350z Enthusiast 6MT very soon . I have access to Nissan's VPP (D) plan through my employer... trying to decide if it's best to go that way, or just to negotiate with a salesperson.

MSRP, invoice and VPP numbers are below. This includes the 350z enthusiast 6MT, with the side airbags, floor mats/trunk mat, and cargo convenience pkg.

Here are the numbers:

350z Enthusiast 6MT

MSRP
- base price: $29,600
- dealer options: $865
- dest charge: $625
- TOTAL: : $31,090

Invoice
- base price: $27,425
- dealer options: $714
- dest charge: $625
- TOTAL: : $28,764

VPP
- base price: $26,638
- dealer options: $714 (est. -- hopefully I can get these for invoice)
- dest charge: $625
- extra VPP fee: $666
- TOTAL: : $28,643

So, VPP ends up being $121 under invoice... should I go for it?

Thanks in advance!

I bought my car using VPP. This is a very fast process - you go to the dealer, give them your VPP number and they give you a price OTD. No hassle, no wasting time.

IF I were you I would wait for the 08 models - since you still get the VPP discounted price. Otherwise see if they do offer any incentives for 07.

Also if you are in school you can still get student discount - if they still offer it.

Good luck with the purchase. And post some pics when you get HER.

EDIT: the dealer should not charge you doc fees

Use both. Try haggling the price first to see if you can get it lower than what you can get with the VPP. If you can't, then use your VPP.

^^
if there are no manufacturer incentives/promotions (like cash back) you will not be able to get a car under invoice.

I just looked on edmunds and they do not list any incentives for the Z. Probably they will offer something when the '08 becomes available.

Of course you can.

Why would you think you can not?

Not for a typical customer if there is no promotion available.

Invoice price = what dealer pays for the car... At invoice he is making $0.00. If the dealer sells the car under invoice he is losing money on this deal (omit dealer holdback for now).
The Nissan holdback is 2% of invoice (according to edmunds) - so for a $30k Z that would be around $600.00.

It is easy to get a car under invoice if there is a manufacturer rebate program. When I was bying my Z - they offered 3% financing or $2000 cash back. So the "real" cost of the Z would be invoice - $2k rebate (holdback ommited).

Currently, Nissan does not offer any rebates/incentives on the Z. => I would think it is VERY hard to get a car under invoice.

MSRP for accessories like floor mats, cargo convenience pkg, etc. Should I not be paying for those?

I used VPP back when people were paying MSRP but now depending on dealer inventory and your flexibility on options/color/etc you may be able to get a better deal than the VPP price...

Generally those items are factory items not dealer install. But its just semantics. Yes you must pay for them. My target price is $29,225.

Thanks.... so the VPP price at $28,643 seems to be a good deal then.

Several people have noted that I should see how low I can get via negotiating, then go with VPP if it can't be beat. That's what I'll do.

Wondering if it makes sense to wait until the 2008 models are on the lot, then try to get a great deal on an 07?

thats always an option as the 2007 and 2008 have no real changes so you might be able to save some cash that way but by the the selection of 2007s will be a lot less than they are now so you have to weigh getting the car (color/trim) you want VS saving 1-2 grand

Personally for me if I am buying new I want it to be exactly what I want. The right colors and basically the trim I want.

If I remember correctly incentives didn't really hit on the Z till about when the new models actually were hitting showrooms.

A good time to buy a 2007 is when the 2008 is on the lot. But the problem is selection. You will have to take whatever everyone else did not want.

I don't entirely agree with that. Historically, the best incentive on a 350Z has been $1500, last year it was $1,000.

The resale losses are not made up with a modestly incentivized purchase price. Come January, you are better off driving a lightly depreciating 2008 model all year long. Additionally, I do agree that you are getting stragglers; cars with miles, oddball colors and options, etc.
