CarMax prices may appear high, but there is good reason. CarMax will get rid of trades that show any potential frame damage. They may also refuse a trade-in that is modified.

This does not insure that every CarMax vehicle is perfect, it justifies the prices.

My buddy bought from CarMax. Had a very good experience. According to Blue Book, that is a real good price on that car.

Sounds okay but have car checked out by mechanic you pay & trust. If Carmax does not let you do it, walk.

my parents buy their cars from carmax. actually, they swear by it. they love it. i think one time carmax had a car in arizona that they wanted, so when it shipped here they saw that it had a couple of dents. carmax fixed the dents and refunded them the shipping cost.

I bought my '03 Z Performance last December from CARMAX and I had very few issues! As far as their reputation goes, davidv is right, they tend to mark up there cars quite a bit but the quality of their vehicles tends to be very high!

When I was shopping for my Z last year, I had 5 Z's on my list of potential buys! Checked carfax, test drove all 5, and I had my family mechanic as well as a friend, who drove stick better than me, drive all the vehicles as well! Although all of them drove about that same (2 of them turned out to have an alignment issue), the customer service @ carmax (initially) was the best out of all 5 dealers, they actually dropped the price for me, which I thought was rather odd (the cost of 21000 before processing and when I got the vehicle my invoice said 20000 before processing...hmmm weird)

The only problem I had with them was that when they brought my car around to put the plates on, the service worker dinged my driver side door; i didn't notice it until I got home but when I brought it back in later that day they said that there was nothing they could do about it cause it was noted on the release form...I didn't see them write it on the release form when we did the visual inspection, I know it definitely wasn't there when when I did my final inspection on there lot cause dings was something that I was looking for pretty intently and this one was pretty obvious. There were a couple of other small mechanical issues (like trunk hydraulics not holding up the trunk) but they took care of all those issues in a very timely manner!

My rating of CARMAX

Around here, I don't its so much that they mark-up their cars a lot as that they put a lot of money into the cars they buy.

I wouldn't buy from there simply because I don't mind bragaining, but for a simple, no hassle experience, they have a good rep.

they are really picky about what you bring them. for example, my parents had a mitsubishi outlander, and back in the "rice" days, we put those oh so cool at the time LED windsheild washers on it. when we went to sell it to carmax, they took a shitload off the trade in price because they had to "uninstall and order" factor windshield washers.

On top of that, they don't give you much for you're car at all, below blue book trade in.

Yup. Several times. And if I don't sell it to them, I take their offer to the dealership whare I am buying the new one and tell them they must match it (after we have already agreed on the price of new car)

CarMax almost always make me the best offer.

Everyone gives below book for Mitsubishi....they are a "back of book" manufacturer.
