Default Buying a used 2006 Z

Hey all,
I am planning on buying a manual 2006 glacier white 350Z coupe. It's got 6000KM on it, and at $36000 CAD, it's not a bad deal.

A few questions:

- What are the pros and cons of 2006 model, that I should be aware of, compared to 2008 model? I know the HP and TQ rating is different, hood is different, and engine is DE not HR.

- Does the 06 model come with dual intakes?

- I assume there are more parts available for 06 model?

Thank you in advance for helping me out here. I will soon join you guys as a new Z owner. Excited!

You pretty much summed it up right there. Different engine and hood. If you want to get picky, a few colors also changed

- Does the 06 model come with dual intakes?
Nope.

- I assume there are more parts available for 06 model?
Yes.

That is a very good deal for an 06 in Canada if it's a Canadian model. Is it a US import, or a Canadian vehicle? Only reason I ask, is because the US Models come in four trims, while the Canadian only comes in one (Grand Touring). So be careful you are not buying a base US import for 36k.

I didn't know the '06 came in Glacier White. Mine's Pikes Peak White Pearl. The differences are as follows:

PROS:
- The '06 has a higher horsepower and torque rating than the previous models.
- Has the DE motor and not the HR, which is good for modifications considering there are more parts available.

CONS:
- If you buy a 6MT, it's said to have oil consumption problems. I've got no such problems on my 5AT.

There is also a fix for it if it happens to you. FWIW, no problems at all with mine.

Actually the replacement "V2" motor that Nissan came up with is no better than the original. Most people with the new motor are STILL burning oil. I speak from experience. I would really be cautious about buying a used '06 model, especially if its MT. If you buy it and it doesnt have oil consumption, you will love it

sounds like buying a 06 MT is not a good idea? Is oil burning that bad? Thanks guys for so much input on this. It really helps me make a decision.

Alright so this looks like a well known issue, and people are PISSED OFF about it.

I am now thinking IF I should get this 06 MT at all, if it's going to be this bad.

there are many 06 MT z's w/oil consumption problems, and many without.
i suggest perhaps contacting a couple of the main dealerships that people on this forum deal with and inquiring as to how many 06's they've dealt with that have the oil consumption problem.

two california dealerships are performance nissan in duarte and west covina nissan in west covina. both are sponsors on the forums.

thank you very much for the detailed info. i am also going to see this dealer tonight, and will inquire about this issue. apparently they offered some kind of nissan certified vehicle or things to that effect, so i should be covered, and my 06 Z should be isue free.

I personally think the price is too high, especially when you have access to the US market. Importing is not too much work, and there are brokers who can help.
I did it myself, just research on the Registrar for Imported Vehicles. Its the Canadian government site that explains the process. I have a 2006ZR MT and am very happy. Haven't had it long enought to know if it's an oil burner, but will deal with that if it happens. ( I bought the 2006 because it was a great deal and had the 300HP engine among other things. Oil issue is something to consider) Search the forum for a thousand posts on this .
Unless there's something about the 2006 that you have to have, I'd seriously consider a 2007 which seems to have the best performance and reliability. I would also expect that as soon as the next edition appears you'll see prices drop as owners trade up. So have a look on Ebay if you have a chance.

I was just told that a large % of 06 MT has this oil burning issue, while 07 MT has a cynlinder issue?

Looks like I will have to wait a little longer for 08 model then.

Don't mean to hijack your thread but I'm in the market for an 06 6MT also.

How bad is the oil consumption issue?? Any of you guys that are currently having the problem, how much excess consumption are we talking here? Thanks for the input so far..

Damn.

I wasn't expecting to hear that... wow. Is there any information, sources or Nissan recalls that I could read up on to possibly identify which 06's had the problem? Or is it pretty much a toss up whether it happens or not??

If I would run into the problem, surely hope not, but it would still be under factory warranty, so couldn't I have it "fixed" like you did? btw, thanks for your help!

It appears to be the majority of rev-up models, which came in all manual trannsmission '06's, and '05 track & 35th anniversary M/T's as well. They all came with a different 2nd compression which is more than likely the root of the issue, the ones that don't have show problems yet I'm sure will once they get up there in miles. Ther is a 130pg thread in the engine/drivetrain section, it's at the very top and hard to miss.
