Premium price pre-order shenanigans???

I just got back from visiting a Nissan dealer (it will remain nameless) and inquired about the 350Z. I spoke with a sales manager and at first he gave me the standard line about none being available for a while due to pre-orders being filled. Then he implied that I "might" be able to get one sooner, but only at a premium price. I asked him what he meant and he "winked" and said that money talks. He asked if I would be willing to accept any color and model. He continued with some vague rambling, but I felt that he was willing to sell a pre-ordered Z to me. Although he never said that.
I am not be willing to spend more than MSRP and I don't want to take someone's pre-ordered 350Z. I'm mentioning this as a warning that some dealers may choose to play games with these hot commodities.
I'm not sure what anyone with a pre-order can do, short of camping out at the dealer's office. All I know is that I would be concerned if I didn't have any confirmation from Nissan that they have my 350Z on order.
I'm not trying to stir the pot, just a warning about what could be happening.

Is there any source from Nissan where you cam find out if you are indeed a pre-order since I never received any confirmation from my United Auto Group pre-order???
Thanks

My take is that the salesman is full of BS. Yes, I'm sure he would try to rip someone off on a preorder that fell through, but I still really doubt that anyone except the most dishonest dealer would sell a preorder out from under someone. I was under the impression that once the preorder is over, the dealers will get what they get, as far as models and options. What if your salesman were to sell your car and then not be able to quickly find the same model/options? Totally busted. I just think there's too much at stake for them for this to happen in all but a few isolated circumstances.
In addition, once you have your VIN, I don't see how this could happen at all, without the dealer risking a serious lawsuit.
Best thing you can do...talk to your dealer. Let them know that you're in the loop as far as production and timetables and expected info are concerned. Make sure they know that you will find out it they were to try a stunt like this. Hell, many members of my350z.com know more than most of the salesman out there about the schedules and procedures involved with the preorder program. Info is your weapon. Use it.
