Default New here...shopping for a Z

Hi everyone, im new to the forum, been lurking around reading for a while but this is my first post.

I'm still shopping for a Z, since I live in the salty midwest I'll only be driving it 8 or 9 months a year. I have a 10 year old SUV that I'll drive in the winter and a 1970 GTX that I rebuilt every nut and bolt on over the past 7 years. I've never owned a rag top, I did drive 260 and a 280 years ago. I'm probably going to get a touring roadster that has between 20 and 50K on the clock. What I'd like to know is are there any particular model years that I should watch out for? Is a 06 a lot better than a 04 because in 04 the (fill in the blank) goes bad at 40k. Things like that I'd like to know about? Anything else I should look for in general. Hopefully I'll be around here a lot in the future.

Thanks
Ken

The only thing that goes bad in the roadster is your perfectly done hair.

03s have some clutch and tire wear issues some 07s have clutch problems, some 06s burn oil some dont.I have a 06.5 that doesnt burn oil.I used the word "some" so mutch because there are alot of people with those model years that have not experienced any problems.

I've heard of the tire wear issue before on the 03 but not the clutch issues. What is the oil buring issue? I have had cars that burn a little oil before. Is it excessive or to the point where it hurts performane?

Thanks for the reply

Look at any brand and you will find complaints about any year. Of course that doesn't account for all the satisfied owners out there. I usually make it a point to avoid first year models [that would be 03 for the 350z] but i broke that rule last year when i bought an 07 Tundra. Here it is a year later and i've yet to have any problems with the truck.

I just picked up an 06 GT recently and have been doing some reading here on the "oil consumption" issue. Do a search if you are interested. Some of 06 models burn more than an acceptable amount of oil but it doesn't affect performance. Nissan is actually replacing the engines that fail the consumption test. I've only put about 400 on my GT so don't know if it's burning any yet. I think it would have to be really bad for me to let them replace my engine. I've read some the replacement engine still burn oil.

Best advice is have whatever you find looked at by a mechanic.

05s seem to have had the fewest issues based on posts here. In general, the Z has been quite reliable.
