Default What happens to man. warranty when I buy a used z with no maintenance receipts ?

Hi All,
I am seeing some used 350z and some (actually most) do not have the receipts for all maintenance and oil changes which were done (or not done?). How will that affect the Nissan Man. warranty still on the car ? Is this something I should expect when buying a used z ?

Thanks!

Elad

Best case - the previous owner got the service done by a dealer so it's all in the computer.

Worse case - you experience some major engine failure and the dealer and NNA refuse to warranty it because the previous owner has no records and did have any service done by a dealer.

You have to figure out where between those two extremes each car falls. Get the VIN and check with your local dealer to see what if any service records are in the Nissan system. If none, and the owner has no records you have to look at the car carefully. Is the oil black? If so, avoid it. Is the car beat up? Is the inside and outside taken care of? if the answer is no, then you might want to pass on it. If the car is immaculate, fluids look good and otherwise seems mechanically sound and the only thing missing the is records, then it might be worth it to take a chance on it.

does one have to provide proof of service records in order for nissan to validate warranty. So I guess if I want to keep my warranty good, I cannot do oil changes myself?

I experienced the worse case, oil pump seized after a road trip and put a nice window in my block. I did all the service on my car from when I picked it up used at 22k miles. The previous owner did not have his service records with the car, though my car was immaculate when I got it...long story short, denied by NNA and had to foot the bill myself.

If you want to keep your warranty with self service, keep every single receipt for oil, filters, etc and file them. They will look at the dates of the receipts. To verify the length of time to see if you are servicing "on time" 3 months, 3k etc.

Yes and No. If you go in for a broken radio, service records would be meaningless. If your engine spins a bearing and you have no proof that the oil was changed at the recommended interval, then NNA could (in theory) deny coverage. If you do it yourself, make sure you have receipts for the oil purchases and keep a log of date and mileage when you perform the oil change, etc.

Your owners manual contains the following warning...

You should be aware that incomplete or improper
servicing
may result in operating difficulties
or excessive emissions, and could affect
your warranty coverage
. If in doubt about any
servicing, have it done by your NISSAN
dealer.
The car is delivered with a Warranty Manual in addition to the Owners Manual.

The Warranty manual explains...

MAINTENANCE AND RECORDS
As a condition of this warranty, you are responsible for properly
using, maintaining and caring for your vehicle as outlined in your
OWNER’S MANUAL and your NISSAN SERVICE & MAINTENANCE
GUIDE, and maintaining copies of all maintenance
records & receipts for review by Nissan. Failure to do so is likely
to result in the denial of warranty coverage
.
Evidence of the performance of the required maintenance
should be kept and presented as proof of such maintenance in
connection with related warranty repairs. To assist you in
maintaining appropriate records, the maintenance log located
in your NISSAN SERVICE & MAINTENANCE GUIDE can be
used along with supporting repair invoices, receipts and other
such records.

In the What is NOT Covered section of the Warranty manual...

DAMAGE, FAILURES OR CORROSION DUE TO
LACK OF OR IMPROPER MAINTENANCE
This warranty does not cover damage, failures or corrosion
resulting from:
Lack of performance of proper maintenance services as
outlined in your NISSAN SERVICE & MAINTENANCE
GUIDE.

■ Use of improper or dirty fuel, fluids or lubricants.
■ Use of parts not equivalent in quality or design to parts
supplied by Nissan.

I do not recall any dealer asking me to validate routine maintenance. Besides if it ever gets to that point you probably need a team of lawyers anyway.

Thank you all! So if I understand it correctly - Yes it would be very good to have all receipt so that worse case is covered - and No this is not something to expect a dealer to have.

I wonder if an inspection on the date of purchase would assist later if/when a relevant claim is made. But I guess this is really something for lawyers to figure out.

Anyway, now I know that a car with service records would "worth" more to me - especially if I am purchasing additional (extended) warranty for it..

ok Thanks!

I bought mine without a warranty. I am not concerned about it. *engine blows up on the way home*

+1 to what david mentioned. they will not fight you over minor work.

Hi guys,

I apologize for reviving a dead thread, however, I have a question which pertains to this topic.

My 350z is due for its 30000km maintenance... according to the service manual, all the dealership is going to do is "inspect" a bunch of items, as I had my oil changed at 28000km...

If I don't get this "inspection" done, am I technically voiding the terms of the Nissan warranty plan? The dealership wants about 200 dollars for the inspection. Ideally, I would prefer not to spend the 200 dollars...

Appreciate your help.
