Exclamation Daily Driver in NY...

Which should I get? Basically these are my only two options, the car will be daily driver in all seasons.

2000 Toyota Celica GTS - 91,000 miles, stick, good condition, clean title, 4th gear synchro grinds when downshifting

2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5RD - 110,000 miles, stick, fair condition, clean title, body isn't perfect and engine needs some work, AWD, 2.5 boxer engine

Which seems to be better and will be more reliable (generally speaking)?

I have a set of snow tires and wheels and a snowboard roof rack that will fit either.

Im more curious about dependability..

I would go with impreza also.

I would never buy a car that is having transmission problems. Too expensive to fix.

^ I do agree with that. Last thing I want really is to replace the transmission... Other things like starter or timing belt is easier.

I don't know much about a worn synchro but it seems like the tranny could go at anytime, correct?

Thanks for the input guys, Impreza it will be! I love the looks of the older RS style.

I recently bought a 93 sentra for 700 and put about 250 into it and its perfect for me. As long as it meets your needs then why not do it. Good luck.

The guys on subaru forum said it needs a ton of workbc the head gaskets and 100k service need to be done.

I was thinking of flipping it to sell on ebay and selling as is..

You don't want to buy someone else's problem. Why not go a similar route as me and get an 90s sentra or altima? My sentra has 196k, probably wasn't really taken care of and is running strong. I don't want to push my luck but this engine is amazingly strong, especially with the mileage it has.

also, to me, for the price you are paying you are basically buying a "beater"

I would rather get a car for under 1,000 rather than 2,000, because worst case scenario, you are out 1k instead of 2k

the last thing you want is a money pit.

Whatever you buy, make sure it is stick. I have a few friends that bought cars around these problems and almost every single car that was auto ended up having transmission issues soon after purchase, and the manuals lasted long.

Youre right about that. Automatic trannys cant take too much abuse, and ive bought an auto before only to have it shift harsh and basically go out on me.

Now im debating on not getting this subaru fixed and trying to flip it and make maybe $300?
