Question [$1800] 2003 350z Touring - Good deal?

Around a week or two ago, I posted something similar about a different 350z, but I’m still on the hunt and could really use some guidance from those of you with more experience in buying used vehicles. I’ve found a 2003 Touring 350z with an automatic transmission for sale in my area. It has 200k miles and a clean title. The seller says the car cranks but won’t start and is throwing camshaft and crank sensor codes. I'm waiting to get the exact codes and will update you guys when I do.

The current owner bought the car three weeks ago, fully aware of its non-running state, with the intention of using it as a shell for a drift car. He wasn’t concerned about the high mileage for his purposes. However, he’s now selling it because he no longer has the time and space to work on the vehicle. He mentioned that the previous owner claimed, "My son parked it at a 7/11, went inside, came out, and it wouldn’t start"—definitely an unusual situation. The current owner apparently hasn’t tried to diagnose any of the issues himself and has only read the codes the car is throwing.

I have around 6-7 grand to work with on my search for a Z, but this one caught my eye because of the price. The car looks great for a 21-year-old vehicle, with both the interior and exterior in impressive condition. My main concern is whether I can get it running again without breaking the bank. If I can get it running with minimal effort, I think it could be a great deal. The asking price is $1800, and I'm wondering if this could be a good investment to finally get the car I've always wanted. If things don’t work out after purchasing, I might be able to sell it for more than I paid, potentially reimbursing my investment. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to help out with their advice—I really appreciate it!

Never ever use the word "investment" in the same sentence as "350Z". 🤣

But beyond that, if and only if you are doing all of the diagnostic and repair work yourself, it might be a fun project. OTOH, if you are not willing to accept the risk of possible "other" damage, it's never a good idea.

As long as nothing else is wrong with it other than it not starting due to some crank or cam sensors, $1800 would be a steal. BUT, I would be hesitant about getting an auto since there is no way to tell how it shifts through gears with it not running. Also, in its current state of not being able to drive, there's no way to determine the suspension, braking, steering, etc.

$6K-$7K should be enough to find an actual running Z with less than 200K miles.

You might make $500-$1,000 if you can get it running and try to "flip" it.
