extended warranty isn't a bad idea for any car, especially if you're buying a 2003 model since it was the first year.

as far as paint protection... we all know the paint sucks ***. I would LOVE for someone to come by and key every panel on my car just so I could get my insurance to pay for a repaint of something QUALITY.

The extended warranty is good if you will keep car past 3 years.

Paint protection I got and regret. Fabric guard you can do yourself.

If you have anything done....do the undercoat. It helps to reduce the sound coming into the cabin, and provides a bit of undercarriage protection from the elements.

In almost all cases, extended warranties at the time of purchase is a benefit for the dealer not the buyer. You can get an extended warranty just before your manufacturer's warranty expires or even after is expires. You only need it if you car has continual workmanship problems and you plan on keeping it for awhile. If I had that many problems, I would be getting a new car. Extended warranties do not cover damage only workmanship. Damage is what insurance is for. Almost all workmanship problems will occur during your regular warranty. Even after your warranty expires, major problems would turn into a recall. When your manufacturer's warranty expires you need to evaluate if paying the extra cost for the warranty and the deductable is worth it to you.

Paint protection isn't needed either. Most of the cost for the protection is for the warranty not the paint protection product. The warranty is very restrictive and you have to follow a maintenance plan to keep your warranty in effect, miss one maintenance and your warranty is void. (Read the whole contract and the fine print.) Dealers use this loophole to upsell you more of the mediocre, overpriced paint protection. Unless the warranty specifically states it, physical damage from a road hazard (ie rock hit) or poor maintence (ie not washing your car) is not covered under the warranty. There are aftermarket products that do a better job of keeping your paint looking good at a fraction of the price and following the owner's manual will also keep the manufacturer's warranty in effect for free.
