Anyone buy below MSRP?
I'm in the market for a new Z for my wife. She is all excited about the car, its just a matter of color now...
Before I walk into the dealer, I wanted to educate myself on the car, the options, and what I should look to pay. I am looking at the enthusiast model, with an MSRP of $29,900. In general, does everyone settle for the quoted price or is it possible to drop them down? Any advice is greatly appreciated...

I got mine for $28,143. Enthusiast, 6 speed, side airbags, floor mats, trunk mats, alum. kick plates, and splash guards. MSRP was $29,850 and invoice was $27,563. I probably could have done a little better but I am pretty comfortable with it. Now I just have to wait for it to get here.
People have gotten below MSRP. Your best chance at that is to get something already on the lot. www.nissanusa.com will let you check dealer inventories.
About $2,500 under MSRP on my Roadster. They swore up and down it was the first car sold under, and the first Roadster sold for $10K over, whatever. Someone will give it to you for at least $2K under, just tell them the other dealer did. They gave me a better deal by $5K so I did not buy from their competitor.

My salesman told me the same thing. He said he was so surprised that the GM accepted my offer. He said that was the first Z they ever sold for under MSRP. Typical salesman BS.
It caused me to be mad at myself, because I realized by that comment I could have gone lower. But it’s all good. The Z is a bargain at any price.
MSRP = $29,775
Paid = $28,500
the easiest way to get under MSRP is to know EXACTLY what you want and walk in to the dealer...talk to the owner and say "this will be the easiest sale you will get today. here is what I want...here is the price"
The more time they spend with you answering questions and test driving, the less they will want to bargain for you.

If you know someone who works for Nissan, you can use the VPP program to purchase a vehicle at Invoice minus a 2.87% discount.
I purchases a 2004 350z base model for $24,100 a week ago (plus, tax, title, reg, delivery, financing, etc..).

There is no reason you should be paying anywhere close to MSRP anymore. I could understand it back when the car first hit the lots, but it has been out long enough now that you can deal on them.
Just by the tone of your post, I am guessing this is the first time you are buying a new car from a dealer? I may be way off base but you sound a little tennative. If so, there is an article on edmunds.com that you should read before you go in. They have some other tips and advice about buying a car on there too, but I found this article the most informative. It is a little long, but it is interesting reading.

I paid $1950 under MSRP for my Performance Z.
On a side note, you may want to look at the Peformance model or better to get the VDC option. I your wife ever gets caught driving it wet weather, you'll/she'll be glad you got it.

I was more interested to see how the market for the 350z specifically was, and if the initial dealer markups and ability to dictate terms on a hot/new car were over. I realize that you can knock down a new car price, but I remember when I bought my new s2000 (when they first came out)....there was no way in hell you were getting anything below MSRP. After a year or so, prices dropped and buyers had the edge.
I really appreciate the advice of everyone. I will go check out the peformance model as well and see how low I can get them.
