Default steel wool to the exhaust tip

I used fine steel wool and cleaned/shined my exhaust tip... already did it. Is this bad!?? Might it rust or something?

It's not good. There are polishing pastes that work better for that. Steel wool scratches the hell out of metal.

Steel wool on chrome works good to get the crud off but you still need to apply something to protect it from the elements or the shine will disappear pretty quick if not rust/corrode.

Welcome. Photos are always helpful. Exhaust tips are often coated. Most likely you removed the coating. Here is a simple tip for all cleaning:

begin with the least offensive method (usually soap and water), then move to more drastic measures (like steel wool).

I would get a spray can of clear Krylon or Rustolium to try to head off corrosion at this point.
