You can find 3M plastic polish at most auto parts stores. It has very a fine abrasive and won't harm the finish. In a bind, I have used brasso, which lists one of it's uses as polishing out plastic watch crystals. It works, but if you have old brasso that is not as liquid as when new, it doesn't finish out as well as a new can of brasso does. The stuff loses moisture over time in the can. Go with the plastic polish if you can find it and put a couple of coats of wax over the lights to protect the new finish.

the haze on my headlights could not be removed with a liquid compound.

Chako, even Autozone sells headlight haze repair kits that have sandpaper... lol.

I will have to refinish them, by using one of the kits which is (I think) sandpaper then a wet agent, then a polishing compound. I tried the less abrasive method first.

The buffer sounds like a good idea...

do scratches come out of the headlights? i would assume if you buff them good enough and polish them after, they'd be gone

Im speaking from first hand experience---the buffer and the finese III will polish the lens like it was new. I hit mine every couple of months. On bad areas and fine scratchs I use wet paper 600-1200 Grit depending

Take a look at this stuff. I've heard of numerous success stories from people that have used it on their headlights.

Umm, I hope you aren't using NXT on your headlights. Try some Meguiar's Plastx it's designed for clear plastic. And it does work. It makes the plastic look very clear and removes the hazing.
