you're not supposed to wax it right away unless they bake it. a new car you can because it takes so long to get to you, but if u take ur car in and get it painted ur usually not supposed to do it for like a month or 2. just use soft towels to dry it, dont park next to people, and dont try and wipe dust off the car with a normal towel, use quick detailer and a microfiber

Double check with the shop before you start waxing it. Contrary to the earlier statement "you can wax it right away", you shouldn't wax a freshly painted car. Unlike when it arrives from the factory where it was baked on, a body shop will not be able to totally cure it.

None of that has anything to do with keeping it from getting scratched. There are a number of posts in the forum describing the proper methods to wash, dry and wax a car. If you do a little research, you'll discover the proper detailing methods that will allow you to keep you car looking like new and not gather a bunch of swirls and scratches.

The starting place for anybody interesting in taking care of their cars is http://autopia.org . Visit it and download their free eBook "The Autopia Guide to Detailing".

Question

How were you taking care of the car previously?
Were you happy with the results?

Definitely + 1!!! You risk causing a chemical reaction if you wax when the paint is fresh.

I believe you have to wait a month (depending on weather conditions) before you apply any wax to it. Now if its scorching hot, i would say 3 weeks. No need to rush it....
