Question Polish - 1 layer or mutiple layers?

I have a detailing question for anyone not using zaino.

I'm using a polish before I wax my car. I know that people often apply multiple layers of wax......but......is it (1) beneficial and/or (2) harmful to add more than one layer of polish before waxing?

Thanks,

Kyle

No, and you really don't need to apply wax on top of polish.

Thanks for the reply Bronz.

I'm surprised by the later part of your answer. I had thought that polish mainly cleaned your paint and that the primary job of wax was to protect the paint. I've used polish without wax and I've found that it seems to have a much shorter life span that when I wax after I polish.

wash it with dawn, claybar it, polish it twice, wax it 3 times... then don't look directly into the reflection of the sun

Hi Wren,

Actually, before this thread my intention was to put up to 3 layers of polish (to clean the paint and add shine), followed by (up to) 3 layers of carnuba wax (to add depth to the shine), and finally followed by (up to) 3 layers of synthetic wax (for durability).

you NEED wax after you put on a polish. Your right in that a polish cleans, enhances, and fills minor swirls. Then the wax goes on top to seal the polish in place. (protection) What I do, i put one coat of polish, then apply the wax, then apply a second coat about 2 days later just to make sure the first coat of wax fully cures. I tried 2 coats of polish on my hood.. but have not seen much difference. I think your better off putting multiple coats of the wax rather than the polish

Bonz gave you the Zaino-fied answer. Zaino (or BlackFire) "polish" is much different than the polish you are referring to. The polish you are using is for shine (and possibly cleaning and filling swirls depending on what product) but has no protective qualities. The protection and durability will come the wax you use, which is absolutely necessary in your case.

To answer your original question, you can't layer the polish you are using like Zaino, but there is a small benefit to polishing twice to ensure complete and even application.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. PowerZ saved the day (not to mention read my mind) after I reread your post. I guess we need to define our terms better. Polish to me is Z-2 or Z-5.

Hey Bronz,

Thats why I ask for input from non-zaino users

No problem though. I got the info I needed.

No doubt! Even in non-Zaino land there are widely varying ideas of what constitutes a polish. Some companies use a polish to refer to "shine only" products, and others label abrasives as polishes. Some companies do both... Then throw "glaze" into the mix and you have enought to even confuse professional detailers!

It depends on the type and brand of polish you are using, some add a layer of gloss and some like 3M Swirl Mark Remover is an abrasive compound polish made to remove scratches and swirls.....

Unless someone tells me exactly what brand name and kind of product they are using I can not give an specific answer...
