Default Help! What do you think this is & how can I remove it?

This morning I drove from Brooklyn to NJ. When I arrived home, I looked at my passenger side rear wheel and notices all of these black spots. They are only on this rim and not any of the other rims or car. I tried cleaning it off with wheel cleaner and it did not come off. I looks like it's paint or ink. I also tried to rub it with my finger nail and it doesn't have any noticable edges (like tar). My question: WTF is this ? Did someone vandalize my rim?

Try claying the wheel and see if there is a difference.

Cheers,
Nick

I was going to say it looks like tar. I would try using a degreaser on it. You could find a bottle at your local auto shop or pepboys.

Or just use some elbow grease. I'm sure you know but if not the wheels are clearcoated so treat them like you would your paint. (No metal polishes or anything).

Or maybe some Goo Gone may work as well.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried goo gone and also had 2 body shops look at the wheel. The black marks basically ate through the clear coat and stained the wheels. My body shop guy says it looks like brake fluid ate through the finish. After he said that I remembered that I had the car at the dealer two weeks ago and had the rear brakes done and aligned. I'm now trying to get them to repair the wheel.

I have a similar problem on all my wheels. Mine looks like someone sprayed the wheels and just let the brake dust run down them, but nothing I use helps. I've tried different commercial cleaners, degreasers and even acid, but nothing works.

hope the dealer is paying for the repairs...but lets face it, how likely is that to happen?

Good luck bro!
