It depends what you want the paint on the car to look like. Sealant will give you a more reflective look to the paint, it also might give it a candy look. Where a wax will give you depth to the paint.
Another thing about sealant is that if there are any scratches on the car, it can bring them out to. Make sure the paint is prep well before you apply a wax or sealant.
A good wax for your area would be Collinite 845. It's a very durable wax and I think a few professional detailers use it as a topper for the harsh winters back there.
Hope this give some info to your question

Ive tried a few different brands of wax from F1 pink wax to Auto Balm and right now I have been steadily using Blackfire Wet Diamond sealant and its durability and easy of use keeps bringing me back. Plus it leaves a very wet finish that lasts and beads nicely. So far its outlasted any wax Ive used.
I will say this though, if you dont have time for a full detail and want to cover minor swirls Auto Balm is awesome. Its a pain to put on, but it fills very well and makes my magnetic black very deep and adds a "warmth" look is the best way I can describe it.

Both are great in their own right. Here are some of the differences I've noticed, some of which have already been listed. Sealants last FAR longer than a natural carnauba wax. Sealants, especially lower quality ones, can look more plastic like rather than glossy. However there are tons of great sealants that have a deeper shine and durable protection. I highly recommend the Blackfire Wet Diamond with Polycharger or the new Menzerna Power Lock Polymer Sealant. These are both outstanding sealants that even rival the depth and gloss of quality carnauba waxes. Sealants are also just a little easier to apply in most instances. Carnauba waxes offer limited protection but a really deep and glossy appearance. However for the tiny bit of extra gloss I'd suggest the sealant because of the extended durability.
If you want the best of both worlds apply a sealant first and then layer a wax on top of it! Let me know if you have any questions or if you'd like a recommendation.
