Default cleaning a smear of ???

I know this is elementary for many of you, but I need some advice. I recently got something like dark, solidified oil streaked across the side of my new roadster. I don't what it is or how I picked it up, but my normal cleaning isn't doing much to get rid of it. (At first I thoght they were scratches... then it smeared.) In November, I had a first coat of CrystalGuard applied, and I'm afraid to scratch/damage it. What's the gentlest way to remove something like this? Thanks in advance for any help.

It sounds like tree sap. They make bug and tar removers, but I wouldn't recommend using that on a black car.

If all else fails I know Meguiars, and Turtle Wax make bug and tar removers that are non abrasive. Just make sure you clean the area, then use the bug and tar remover on the stain, wipe the area with a clean towel, and then apply a spot application of wax.
