Default Helmet question

I need to buy one Know it has to be DOT approved but what kinda helmets do you guys use? Do I just goto a bike shop and get one? Can I goto wal-mart and pick up one? Will a motocross helmet thats dot approved work?
Just tired of spending $10 a week renting helmet at the track. I couldve had enough money saved up by now to buy a nice helmet.

NHRA specifies a Snell certified helmet. Motorcycle helmets are not necessarily Snell certified. Selection at motorcycle shops is poor. I recommend shopping on line. I trust my head to Bell. Photo of the Mag 5 above.

It all depends on who is requiring you wear a helmet and if you plan on going on to other forms of auto sport.

The biggest difference between SA rated and MA (motorcycle) is fire protection. Because motorcycles are open, chances are you wont be trapped in a fire.

Yeah I started looking aorund for one too after I took my Z to the track and was surprized at how expensive they are. I'm going to keep shelling out that 10 bucks for a while.

Thumbs up

Looks like i am buying a helmet aswell.

Found this site and the helmets look pretty cheap. I have never bought a helmet so not sure what all is needed. I assume it has to have a Snell of 2005+ for this year.

http://www21.serrahost.com/Moto-Dire...t=49&total=195

But looking through the site, they can be had for $60 plus $15 for shipping. Thats not bad at all.

Let me know what you guys think

How have you guys gotten away without a helmet for so long? How do you get through tech inspection?

David, Im not sure how they got away with it either. My track asks what I think my ET is going to be, and if you say 13.99, guess what, your wearing a helmet. I could never get away with it.

Scorpion helmets can be had for $130 or so and have the same level of protection as Arai's. I would get a full face helmet because losing teeth or breaking your jaw/cheek bones would suck.

I got a Bell open face from Walmart for forty bucks. At the track they never examine it. Usually in tech, they ask if I have one and I say it's in the trunk. IHRA

Ya, I dont know how/why they are so lax on that. Im actually glad that the techs are as careful as they are. I would hate to be on the side of a car that shouldve be failed, but was passed by a lazy tech, then something happens. I feel better knowing that the techs are actually goind their job.

I always get checked when I put in my et. I just have to goto the tower and borrow a helmet everytime I goto the track. So far I think I spent $60 to borrow a helmet this season. 6 days at the track.
