Default first time at the drag strip

i went to the strip for my first time last night. i did about 7 runs, my best being a 14.5 and most of the others around 14.6 (also had a couple in the low 15's ). im pretty sure my tires are severly limiting my times because they are basically bald. i couldnt get traction through first and part of second and there was a lot of wheel hop. my 60 fts were consistent around 2.3. i launched between 1500-2000 rpm to try and find where i'd get the smoothest take off.

hopefully next time i go to the track i'll have a new set of tires and i'll be able to get my time down more, especially the 60ft.

anyone have advice to help me out more? with new tires and current mods my goal is to hit a 14.1 or better.

Unless your tires are bald to the point of almost showing steel belts, the baldness shouldn't be the issue. 18's and street tires are just not ideal for launching at the drag strip. Try lowering the tire pressure to 20psi, but practice makes perfect. Or you can go get some mickey thompson ET streets and just do 6000rpm clutch drops Slicks or feathering the clutch is really all you can do to limit wheel hop unless you find the perfect launch rpm.

What was your m.p.h?

Those tires will hurt your 60'. Once they get that far gone, traction is very limited. The compound also tends to get harder over time, causing less friction.

What kind of gas are you using.

You should be trapping around 100-101 during warm weather if you are close to sea level. You may be getting some knock retard.

I would stick to the stock air pressure, as you have tires designed to run on 32-39 lbs, 36 being the best. Too little and you get over deflective tires, which means traction on the edges only. Non drag Radials do not benefit from lowering your pressure, as they are designed for factory pressure to maintain the best contact patch.

Next time you go to the track try putting in a gallon or two of 104 octane, if they have it available, and run your tank down before getting there, so you will have less chance of getting KR, then reset your ecu before you make your first pass.

I ran on BP 93 and had not reset my ecu when I made 101 m.p.h. passes, and it felt like my car wasn't running its best. That was during warm weather at 500'.

I use Mobil 93 octane. it's the only gas that has ever been in the car.

I had about 3/4 a tank of gas in my car when i was at the track too.

I was running with tire pressure at 28psi which another 350z guy at the track recommended.
