most of the time no, however sometimes yes. i'm not quite sure what does this, but its not all that often. i've burned off probably about 50 tires on the back of my z, at least. i've only encountered the axle hop about 3-4 times. i think you have it if you have too much traction on the rear end. i drift, so my tires are normally over heated and kinda slick, and i only run 245s in back. if your doing burnouts in water boxes or on hot tires, you should be fine. if your doing burnouts on the road with 295s, you might have axle hop.

i'm not really sure why it shows up on the z. maybe if you increase your spring rate or stiffen your shocks ( if you had coil overs or adjustable suspension ) it would get rid of it.

its a rough diff though, but great for drifting and putting down power.

oh, and as to the stock vlsd in the higher end z cars, they tend to be inconsistent, and not hold up to big beatings over the long haul. however, they are very quiet and don't clunk around, so they are a great inbetween diff. if you don't want to have a clunky diff, the stock ones are a good comprimise.

+1 I've drifted the stock and it gets the job done. Sometimes it's there and sometimes it isn't.

You still can do donuts with open diff, just take some practice. just turn the wheel, floor the gas and when you feel the back go out, countersteer, but not too much. Open diff drifting try using weight to start and continue drifts.
