Default Z fluids for drifting

This thread is for all those interesting in the sport but unsure about fluid choices and changes.

I'm setting my Z up for drifting and I know I need to run better fluids. So...

I'm currently running mobile1 5W30 syn motor oil (daily Z). I may run something better when I acquire more skill and experience. For now, there's no issue.

I've heard that changing the power steering can be very beneficial for drifting. Therefore, I want to change it but I'm not sure what viscosity or brand to use. Anyone have recommendations?

The stock transmission fluid pretty much sux. My clutch has gotten stuck (mid-way) during hot days (85+ degrees). I definitely need to change that so, again, what viscosity and brand would be good for a daily/weekend drifter?

Lastly, is the stock VLSD. I have no idea when the fluid was last changed and I'm pretty sure the previous owner beat the car up. What is a good viscosity and brand to use?

All those experienced drifters please add insight.

I use motul for all my fluids (engine/transmission/brake/clutch/dif) and redline for power steering since motul doesnt make one. May also want to consider upgrading to a larger power steering cooler when you change the fluid, I went with the nismo but heard theres cheaper and better alternatives out there.

I run Amsoil in the diff (with additive), trans, and power steering. Redline in the engine.

Sounds good guys thanks. You both named the top 3 brands for oils.

What visocities are you running on your fluids?

Redline has a variety of synthethic lubricants that have been proven in racing. Try their PS fluid and MTL/MT90 tranny fluids (50/50 blend for the right viscocity) and Waterwetter to extend the boiling point of your radiator.

I'm running 10w40 Redline in the engine, Amsoil 80w140 (with additive) in the diff, 75w90 in the trans, Amsoil ATF in the power steering (only stuff I've found I do not boil while doing track days with big tires and a stock cooler), and straight water with the above mentioned water wetter in the cooling system.

Thanks dkmura. I'll try that.

Thanks Mike. Your insight is always welcomed. Hopefully Jason can add comments next.

PS:
ok wait.....ps cooler definitely..

looky here:
https://my350z.com/forum/engine-driv...power+steering

the stock power steering cooler - is full of suk......
when your drifting the ps fluid passes through the two row oem ps cooler to fast! - for it to be effective......

you simply need any simple 30 buck transcooler, mounted as a ps cooler...........
here in july with Texas heat - i have had zero issues....

I use typical fluids, with water wetter to supplement...never had a problem and ive been to multiple events in summer texas heat..

DIFF:

I use this, i use that...blah, blah, blah...

*** dat....

I change my diff fluid before every event...........i rarely now use my car as a daily, so using it after an event i dont always change it, but sometimes i do, if i know im not gonna make an event for a while...

I have a nismo set on full lock - use transX and dat **** sherrif recommends........motul something (sorry, its halloween and im da drunkz)

Tranny:

Its oem for me, i just change it often...never blown my 04 tranny, cant wait till i do, cause junk yard diving is fun....

Engine:
I use Castro oil - i change it just like the diff, new fluid prior to every event........a few days before, i daily it a few days before..

what else.........sorry, cantz think......me and acidjake75 are drunk here...but we thought we would check my350z while we updated the playlist.....wez playing muzik from da laptop..

dat is all....

Okay dude, i just realized you said you had a VLSD...whatever your saving your money for next...........stop and get a aftermarket diff...........the best investment you can make...........

acidjake said -"amen" as i typed that..

hands down, you need a diff...........
for the high speed entry, low weight on the rear end.......the vlsd will be fine..........but on any decreasing radius drift turn or transition the vlsd will "shear".......ur car will be full of da suxor....and transitions will be difficult to master......

im not sure if your a beginner, but seriously a 2 way locking diff is sooo dammn benificiall.....

-j (soorry, once again, im da drunk tonight...) its halloween.....dont judge...
