Default Importing border tax clear up.

There's only one gray area if you will about importing from the states and that’s about the taxes, I read somewhere when you buy your car in the states for exporting purposes you pay the tax on the car but get it back at the border? is this true, can someone who’s imported into Canada clear this up for me please.

Got the rest of the pieces covered.

With brand new 350Zs because they are made in Japan you will also have to pay a tarrif about $3-4K. Also yes like any product if you got to the states and buy a car you will have to pay taxes as you cross the boarder.

No I know about the border fees and taxes, however I'm asking about buying the car in the states that have taxes, when buying the car at a dealership (used) and have to pay tax on top of the asking price, I heard you either don’t have to pay the taxes cause its for exporting purposes or you get the money back at the border??

hi
my friend just bought a car from the states, so i know a little bit about this!
if u buy a car from a dealer anywhere in the states, u will have to pay US tax, but some states like PA, where my friend bought the car from, he bought it from a private party, and theres no sells tax in PA for private sale, so he doesnt need to pay any tax, and plus nowadays, i dont think the US border are willing to pay back the tax that u pay for the car, so deal with states that doesnt have sales tax for used private party sales.

ps. i might be wrong, i want to know more too!!!

I m in the process of importing a 350z from a private seller and hey taxes are right there, 6.1% tax goes to U.S. because it is a foreign manufactured car (u save it if u buy a car that was made in the us) Canadian GST at the boarder, in Quebec (my case) TPS when i put the licence on it for a nice total of 20.95% extra. If you compare with buying in canada from a private seller where u pay only one taxe its a 13.1% extra but if you compare buying from a dealer its only a 6.1% extra, if you save 30% on US priceing its worth it but dont forget to consider transportation 1000-1500$, Money exchange (good nowdays) dont forget the banks will take a 2 to 3% on your Can -US$ exchange, broker fees if needed 250$, Inspection 200$, ..............$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ U better save alot for it to be worth it.

I just imported a touring model. The tax depends on the state it is purchased from. eg I bought in PA from a dealer, there was no tax because I was an "out of state buyer". some states are goofy like california. If you buy private there is no tax, but if you buy from a dealer and intend on driving the car away you have to pay tax. the loop hole is if you have the vehicle hauled (wheels do not touch cali soil) you don't pay tax.

you paid the PST( 8%). GST is 6% and you'll be paying that once you register it at the local dmv.

well i baught a used z from florida from a small dealer and i didnt pay no tax. were not supposed to. and im pretty sure the border wont give you the tax back either. i havent looked into it but i know i didnt pay and that we shouldnt have to. theres a way to get around it. anyways i just paid 6%GST at the border then another 6%PST when i went and got the plates which was bs. but i think they ****ed up at the border because i was reading on the canada customs website and your supposed to pay another 6% if its not made in the states?

also make sure you send a copy of the title to the u.s side this is a mistake a made ended up leaving my car in buffalo for 4 days. u.s must do an inspection before you even go to the canada side its bs they just want you to send them a copy of the title so they can check for liens etc then some lady stamps it and ur good to go. but it has to be done 72 hrs prior to bringing the car to the border. and only certain border crossing have this i know lewiston is where they sent me

heres a link might be helpful http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publicati...f5048-eng.html

It's true were suppose to pay the 6% duty as well because the car is not built in north america, but most customs officers do not enforce this rule, its completely up to the officer, so be polite it could save you some $$$.
