Default Snow tires

Hi guys,

Just went through the search feature on the forum and really couldn't get a definite answer on this, due to the varying years of everyone's cars etc..

I was out today trying to get winter tires for my 06 as it has TPS and they refused to put tires on saying that I could only use 18inch snow tires and I need to move the sensors from my stock tires to the snow otherwise I will burn my computer because the sensors will not be on the tires when I drive in the winter.

Can I have an example of a snow tire set up for an 06 and please let me know what you did with the TPS. I am looking to get an entire set (steelies and all, not switch just the tires)

Thanks in advance!

I have the TPSs on my stock wheels with winters on them. The summer wheels I mount don't have any TPSs and registers as a dotted line for each of the 4 corners on the multi display. It doesn't matter if the TPSs are mounted or not, atleast on the 03s. Take the car somewhere else.

You dont need TPMS, nor do you need 18's.

You could go with 17's and no TPS and you'd be just fine. Infact, I don't know why they told you they told you only 18. Any tire place with a clue would have probably put 17's on your car.

I jus ordered some tires from tirerack as well. They are much cheaper then here. Ended up getting the Dunlop Winter Sports M3's on my 18" stocks.

Make sure you get the same overall diameter for the tire as it may through off your VDC. There are some posts on this issue.

Also, the TPS sensors are coded in order for the computer to know which sensor is the front and which is the rear. They have to calibrated by the Nissan dealer if changed. I am considering not mounting them on my new snows as I am most probably going to buy another set of rims for my summers.

Alternatively you could get two sets of TPS sensors but they may have to be calibrated each time the tires are changed over (due to different codes on the sensors). Does anybody know for sure? Can the computer store two different sets of TPMS codes?

Thanks guys for the responses. I was pretty sure I didn't need 18s for snow tires.

The item about the TPS was that if they are not located by the car's computer it will burn the computer out in the car. They also told me each sensor was like 350.00 to replace??

I will be calling Nissan on Monday to figure out all this stuff, even though they quoted me 1950 for a set of 17's with rims.

That does not sound right but check it out and let us know.

check these out.. half the price...

Dealers offer snow tires as an option for the Z. With the Z centre cap as well.

Yeah I could buy a beater but I don't drive my car enough during the week (I work downtown), just on weekends to go to Niagara...i would be worried about a beater for 2K that is on the hwy...that was all

I was also thinking of renting a compact car for the weekends (usually 100 bucks), but I figured this may be easier...and I like driving my Z

I see a lot of ricers doing this. Unless you plan on driving in a straight line and not using your brakes all winter, put winter tires on all 4 corners.

Any good tire place will refuse your business for such a request.

Here is some useful reading as to why 4 tires are needed.

you should get all 4 tires. think of it another way, you're trying to walk over a sheet of ice and 1 foot of yours has winter boots while you're bare foot on the other foot, regardless of whether you have traction on that one foot, you'll still be slipping and struggle to walk across the sheet of ice, same logic with cars driving through snow.

classic analogy

but none the less still wish you luck in finding some winters for your ride.....

Just a note for anyone +06 due to the larger calipers we can only use 17inch+ winter tires on our car that also have a low profile side wall. Which sucks so now pricing out tires is around 1600-2000....

So I think I may just park it and buy a beater for another 1K....
