Question Form of payment when purchasing a car in the US

I did a search and couldn't seem to find an answer to this. When you purchase a car in the states for importation to Canada what form of payment do you use? I was thinking cash but I've also heard that when you bring more than $10000 cash across the border from Canada you can run into issues with US customs. I guess if you are purchasing from a dealer they may accept a canadian $ personal cheque, a certified cheque or a money order but if the price isn't finalized until after arriving to look at the car this might not work so well. For private sales it seems like cash would be the only option but I could be wrong. Let me know your thoughts or what your experience was.

I used a certified cheque (us funds) and brought 2k in cash for negotiation
They couldn't verify the cheque on the weekend so if you plan on driving off the lot make sure both your and there bank is open

certified check and or bank transfer, also remember that the border doesn’t accept cash, I read either some sort of credit card or check.

I brought a certified cheque but I also made 2 trips. The first trip was to test drive and negotiations. I didn't want to be forced to commit to anything so that's all it was for. Liked what I drove and put the down payment with a personal cheque. Went back after 2 weeks with certified cheque and all the logistics taken care of. Everything went very smoothly this way. I recommend doing it that way as you have to fax the Certifcate of Title to the US border 3 days in advance and arrange insurance to drive it back.
