Default Cost of new clutch?

I gather from reading posts that I'm going to be needing a new clutch. The engine/tach sometimes surges and takes a moment to catch. I've never had one go on me before, but I'm guessing that's what it is, does that seem right?

I called the dealership and they quoted me $1600, is that high? Any recommendations on where to go in the Oakville/Burlington area?

Mark

Buy aftermarket.
I had the Clutchmasters Stage3 Clutch & Lightweight flywheel. I loved it. AND! it will probably work out cheaper then simply purchasing the clutch from nissan.

JWT, Clutchmasters, ACT...many to choose from, I would recommend you do some research then make your decision.

Thanks for the suggestions, started to be able to smell it on the way home.

Can you give me an idea of the cost installed of an aftermarket? I'll start doing some research, but I'm a pretty basic driver, no tracking, although I'd like it to engage a little quicker and sharper than the factory, if that makes sense.

And any recommendations on where to have it done? Clearly I won't make it far from the Oakville/Burlington/Milton area

Thanks,

Mark

Your looking at between $800-$1500 for a clutch & flywheel combo. Install will cost anywhere between $400-$600
Take a look at the marketplace for some deals, but do your homework before buying.

EDIT:

Vuk@AMSzstore may be the closest shop to you, he could probably order in the clutch as well.

that's usually an indication that your clutch is slipping.

Yes, the engine surges and takes a moment to engage, and the last time I drove it last week I could smell it as well when I got in the garage.

Can I do more damage if I drive it to a shop, or should I have it towed?

I can't believe I need a clutch at only 30k, esp when I drive it so easy. I'm assuming the previous owner did a number on it.

^ you don't need to tow it, its not that big of a deal... just get it replaced asap.
It could be that the previous owner didn't know how to drive too... some people tend to ride the clutch, specially drivers who are first learning how to drive manual transmisison.

Thanks for all the help. I'm having the work done by Vuk@AMSzstore and am going with the Z1 clutch and flywheel. I'll let you know how it goes.

Mark,

From what I have heard, the z1 clutch & flywheel is very noisey. Just want you to know before purchasing.

Have you ever heard a car with a performance/noisey clutch?... some really dont like it, but I found it quite appealing.

I <3 clutch chatter

Ya, he did tell me it would be noisy, and no, I haven't heard what it's like before, I'm kinda taking my chances. If it performs well, I'm sure it won't bother me....fingers crossed

Ever sit in traffic beside a diesel truck and hear that concrete mixer sound?..
Well its very similar to that, just not as loud

Its the sound of performance...

Finally able to post a follow up. Very happy with the work Vuk did, Z1 clutch grabs stronger and faster. There is definitely some noise, but doesn't bother me, and is much less the higher you rev before shifting. He took some pics of the old and new clutch
