Default buying a car with a rebuilt title from a police officer...frame was inspected BUT

Check it out. I see an ad for a 35th ann. Z for only 20k. I check it out, guy is nice, a cop and immediately tells me it was rebuilt. He said the damage was only cosmetic, front bumper and door panels and only came out to $2300. He bought the car as rebuilt from the states, had to go through a whole inspection process to get the frame checked in canada before it was allowed to be street legal. Now from what I hear, salvage titles usually mean the damage was worth more than 70% of the car. I know the guy didn't crash the car after buying it, he bought it after it was rebuilt and he probably did the legwork to make sure it was okay. But, anyway, he's not a car guy so maybe he wouldn't know better...what are your opinions? I've seen the document specifying the car is okay, and the frame is not bent.

Salvage could also be water damage. For $20,000 I say keep looking. Probably nothing wrong with it but why take the chance?

Any snow up there yet?

^ Agreed. He may have only done $2300 worth of repairs but insurance companies aren't in the habit of totaling new cars who's damages only total 10-15% of value.

sorry, the cost of repairs wasn't $2300, but the car was bought by a collision centre so the cost for THEM was $2300. He bought it after the accident from the dealership. So he isn't willingly trying to fool me, he drove the car for over a year.

^^understood... but spending 20,000 of your hard earned dollars on a car with a suspect history is something I couldn't do. I'm sure the owner has been honest with you... but does he really know the complete history of this car. Why is he selling away?

STAY AWAY FROM SALVAGE TITLE.

I lost $6500. Bought a car from Quebec with rebuilt title. Brought it to Ontario, failed structural inspection (frame rusted through and poorly fixed, but covered up with POR15 which is why I could not see the damage on my inspection), couldn't register in Ontario. Previous owner took it back but no money. Told me he was going to compensate for it later on. Never happened.

Sorry if I am being somewhat harsh.. But its seems as though you are a very young person, looking to get into a z at the lowest possible price available. Many have offered sound advice; its up to you now.
I wish you luck...

If you have any doubts, walk away

I know it is hard to do, but I did the same thing this week. I was looking at a truck gave the owner a verbal agreement that I would buy it if it was inspected and etested. I get the VIN and go to the MTO to get a printout of the owner history. An auto salvage place ends up being the 2nd registered owner. Shocked with this new info I log in to car fax and get a history. Turns out the first owner drove it for 9 months was in a collision (not written off) 10th month auto salvage place 2nd owner. Then goes to Quebec shortly after.
A used vehicle info package will not show you who has owned the vehicle out of province it will just tell you previously registered in that province.

One thing I know is never to buy a used vehicle from Quebec, their regulations are more laxed then Ontario. They have no problem cutting and welding up to separate cars that have been deemed as structurally unsafe.

If you have a vin i can look it up on carfax for you

^+1, which is why I could not pass the structural inspection in Ontario. Very big mistake. Mind you to the PO. I was your age at the time, way too excited for my own good and ended up costing me.

not worth it to get into such transactions. Not worth risking $$ just to save a few thousand dollars. Do it right, IMO.
