Is this the new 300HP VQ or the 287hp VQ?

 

the new rod is for a new 300 hp VQ. the regular 287 VQ is still using the same rods as before.

 

myG35zx - I wouldn't say VQ30 cars are running boost "more easily". You guys have TT kits that make extreme amounts of torque in the lower RPM vs. our SC/single turbo kits that don't make near that. You guys are bending rods because you are seeing more peak torque then we see.

The new rod nut/bolt allow for higher levels of tensile stress due to increased RPM. VQ30s can handle upto 8000rpm, however we also see a far slower piston speed due to less stroke.

Does the 300ZX turbo and the 300ZX non-turbo use the same strenght rod? Is the photo above of the turbo or the non-turbo?

 

Its a maxima rod not a 300zx. The 300zx is the VG motor and the maxima/350z are VQ.

I keep holding off on FI. I am hoping that the 05's can handle the boost better than the 03/04's. While I have the money to build the motor, I would rather not. Which means I'm not for FI I suppose. But my fingers are crossed anyway.

 

We are waiting for a new connecting rod out of a VQ35 to come in... the non rev-up motor spec rod...

Unfortunatly i do not have the old pistons laying around to compare but the connecting rod bolts are different...

now here is the question...

Is it the connecting rod / connecting rod bolts that were failling in FI apps and they caused the piston to go...

if it was the connecting rod / bolt that was failing and it is now improved then will the bottom end of the Rev-Up VQ35 be better for FI?

guess we got to wait and see...

materials and tempretures the rods & Pistons were made in will change their strength... there are alot of factors involved...

I think as long as the car is tuned properly and not running too lean with any FI set up, the botom end of the new motor is much more reliable for a slightly modified FI set up

 

All we can ASSume from the pictures of the new rods is that Nissan clearly felt the additional RPM redline of the '05 motors caused enough added tensile stress to warrant them to AT LEAST upgrade the rod nut/bolt similar to what VQ30s and probably others have run/proven for 10yrs. years at least.

Additional RPM causes increased inertia/tensile loads, which stress the rods/rod bolts FAR GREATER then the compressive/power loads of boost, which actually counter-act tensile stress. However, the two types of loads on the con rod are different, so I don't think you can assume it's anything but marginally stronger/resilient to power loads then the previous rods.

I've seen lots of bent rods on this board and it's pretty much impossible to tell what gave first, ie rod or rod bolt, but in at least one case it appeared the rod was pretty much intact and the rod bolt was sheared due to most likely a rod bolt failure. Just my opinion/guess, so I'll leave the teardown analysis to the guys here who have the engine building/breaking experience to really answer the rod or rod bolt failure question.

 

It looks like this vendor has the new plenum bottom. You can't tell much about it though from this page. But, looks like it changed.

05 LOWER INTAKE PLENUM!

It is FINALLY In my hands! Goin on my car tomorrow!

It is Beautiful let me tell ya. The excitement I felt ripping open the box. I didnt even stop to pop any of the bubble wrap I was so excited!

And what do I see? Much larger volume of air in the lower intake manifold which means...

What the new Upper Plenums was doing, Nissan did it but to have even more volume in the intake plenum using the factory 05 Rev-UP Engine Lower Intake Plenum!

This will fit on 350Z Coupe / Roadster / G35 Sedan / COupe / FX35... With no modifications... Using the same bolts and gaskets... (I recomend replacing the lower and upper intake plenum gaskets with this...)
