Default Converting 5AT to 3.9 Final Drive???

I seem to remember several people converting their 5AT to the 3.5 final drive. What all is needed to do this? Is it worth doing performance wise? How much is labor on something like this? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, I did the search thing and only got stuff for the 3.9 FD.

TIA
Zach

I think it's worth it in my opinion. Better than most of the bolt on's. I just bought the whole pumpkin for around $300-350 and it's a straight swap for your 5at pumpkin. Labor was around $200 i think, so basically about $500-550 installed. I sold my 5at pumpkin for around $350 or so, if you could do that, then it's about a $200+ mod which give better results than more expensive bolt on's. Sorry for the estimates but it was a little while ago so I forgot exact pricing.

Where did you get the whole pumpkin from? Did you get it off someone on the forums or from a performance shop?

What kinda difference did you see in 1/4 mile times or top speed or acceleration?

I got it from someone on this forum through the classifieds. I havent done any timed testing. I'm just going by seat of the pants feel. I believe there was an old thread where someone went to the strip after doing the 3.5 fd. He was .2 quick in the 1/4 iirc.

Someone posted no loss of fuel economy, the reasoning behind it was the decrease in load due to the higher gearing. They said the city mpg went up and the hwy mpg went down, so overall efficiency didn't really change much at all.

Mine is scheduled to go in on Thursday so I guess I'll find out the hard way

What other parts are needed to make the 3.5 work in the 3.3 housing? This is the info I am looking for?

Anyone who has this in their car, what components are needed and where did you get them?

Like shinz wrote above, I think it's a straight swap, your pumpkin for a 3.5 pumpkin... As far as I know, no other parts required.

i have the 3.9 final drive with nismo lsd

in a couple months i'll be taking it off and wanting to get the pumkin for the auto

350Evo is offering the 3.9 w/nismo lsd pumpkin swap for a little over $2300

I'll be selling the same thing with what would be about 4-5 months of useage on it for about $1500 and you send me yours - just like with 350Evo, but save over $800

just giving a heads up

I'm going APS TT in a few months

You would need to get a stock or aftermarket 6MT LSD. The Nismo LSD is the most common and comes with all of the necessary additional parts. The stock 5AT LSD/FD have very minor dimension differences making a 6MT FD swap not possible without replacing the 5AT LSD as well. That is why it is easiest to just buy an entire 6MT pumpkin if you want the 3.5 FD for your 5AT car.

Well hell, what about converting to the Evo 3.9 Fd? Will it fit in the 5AT pumpkin?

It will fit, but it would be too high for streetable use for the A/T. (MY Opinion)...It would make the gears very short and since the AT does not change gears lightning fast, you might even loose performance, you would loose a lot of top speed also.

This is best left for the Manuals.

well if anyone is interested, my 3.5 final drive andstock LSD are still for sale

don't the 5AT gears have different ratios though than the 6MT gears - not the final drive, but the actual transmission?

what's the rpms at with 80mph in 5th in the 5AT?

If they're normally around 3000rpm, then putting in the 3.9 final drive will raise that to about 3600 which really isn't so bad

Also yeah your top speed will be reduced, but i think it'll still be pretty high - as in 140mph top speed. And just how often do you go 140mph?

The Z can actually go to 180 if the ECU let it, but it limits it to 156 and 160mph or something like that.

The more I think about it, the 3.9 wouldn't be so bad.

a 3.5 MT is about 10% different so a 3.9 would be about 20% different.

your mpg would be 20% less, but man, that'd be quite an improvment. It'd act like the car had 350hp

The downside with a manual and a really high final drive is YOU have to shift the gears a lot. With the auto you get fast shifts anyway - way faster than you'd ever be able to shift in a manual
So I disagree with the comment about the auto shifting slow. They change at 200ms which is about as fast as I've ever heard any auto change except the brand new ferarri which does the gear changes in 150ms with the paddle switches. Even pro drivers I think wouldn't be able to shift that fast

If the touring AT5 has a LSD , it is a direct swap with a MT6 pumpkin . The cheapest way to go . The easiest way would be to swap the whole housing

I think I have found a complete 3.5 housing off the internet for roughly $350-450.
