How do I compete with a Z06?
for everything up til the C6(2005 model), TURN...Vette suspension is AWFUL!!!!!! I'm surround by them, they suck at auto-x and road racing.
Now the C6 is a little bit better but you can still beat it in the twisties. If you want straight line dominance go with the bottle, or some snails

This morning my friend was driving a pretty stock srt-4. I get a call at 10:00 this evening he pulls up with a zo6, nothing but congratulations coming from my mouth we drive around the hood once than say our goodbyes until tomarrow. Now i want to know how to keep up.
"Snails is ebonics for turbos"

I find your friend's claim of a stock SRT-4 "keeping up" with a z06, very hard to believe. The C5 Z06 is a very potent car and in a straight line and the twisties it would smock the econobox SRT-4 unless it had major work. I would think either the guy didn't race or he is a horrible driver.
Anyways, what kinda z06 do you wanna beat? If you're talking about the C6 Z06, the brandy new one, you have along road ahead of you. The stock non-z06 puts down 400hp/400tq, the Z06... well it's ungodly. Also, where do you want to beat it? Drag, Drift, Auto-X, Circuit... All require different strategies. I'm actually building up my Z to beat my friend's dad's C6 (non-Z06 Auto) on a Circuit style track with a nice set of turns and a long back straight. My plan is to go NA but mostly work on handling and driveline:
Lightweight Flywheel
LTWT Clutch
3.9 350Evo Final Drive
Big Meaty 17x8 and 17x9 wheels
Sticky Tires, (as big as they will fit front and back)
Tomei Cams and Valvetrain
All this in addition to what I have now...
I figure if the Mine's and Amuse 350z can take down vettes, so can my frankenstein.

I believe he was trying to say that his friend got rid of his srt4 and got a z06, not that he raced one and beat it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
As for beating a z06 vette (2003+ 405 bhp)there are a ton of things you could do, and I am just a little to lazy right this second to give many examples. But all you need is FI at stock boost and a few exhaust mods and some wider tires. That should keep up in a straight line. My car 345 rwhp is approximately 405 bhp (15% drivetrain loss) which is exactly what the vette has. And the vette is a little lighter than the Z (3116 vs. 3217). So it would be more based on who could get traction and how good of a driver you are.
As for handling, the Z06 handles good, alot better than a normal C5, so once again alot of it comes down to the driver.
All that being said, its hard to really say what it takes to win. Not a big fan of bench racing type stuff.

You do know that car comes with three settings based on your driving, also the suspension is adj stock? Not to mention it traps 114-117mph and runs around 12.5 stock.
Your gonna need FI to even keep up.
A stock Z06, good driver, drag radials knocks off low 12 sec runs. I've seen bad drivers knock off a lot of high 13's too
They can spray their way into the mid 11's pretty easy and for little cost. For you to keep up if he sprays, you'll need to spend major money - I would guess 15-20K.
What keeps me from spending the money is:
a. It's still wouldn't be THAT fast
b. Spent 20k and it added $5k of resale value
c. Could spend $4k on my other vehicle and it would be that fast.
I'm shooting for 11's in the Lightning this year with $5k invested in parts. I wish the Z was this cheap to mod.

I have FI ... dynoed at 356WHP last spring.. raced a friend in a 2003 ZO6 with headers and I think intake.. Got him good 1st, 2nd, 3rd but he walked me around 3rd-4th gear.. I later found out he dynoed at 395WHP.. Those things move already but with light mods they are hella fast..
I got more power mods in my Z this year... and with any luck, will be around where he is in terms of WHP.. but he'll be doing mods too and I'll be fighting that uphill battle again..
good luck..

stock Z06s are flat out track beasts. Once they start doing minor mods, its even harder to keep them in the same category. How are you trying to beat him? Highway roll? Drag? Road course? Driving lessons can make huge improvements. Of course, FI with built internals making 500whp will help too

The only cheap power for a Z would be nitrous.
