Default Not sure anymore :(

Guys please don’t kill me for this, but I need to know...I have an auto Z, how does the engine connect to my tranny?? Do I have a flywheel?? If so, can I buy a lightened one, something like the tilton?? I know its a stupid question, but I’ve been hearing so many things lately I’m not even sure anymore...It would mean a lot to me if somebody could clear this up. Thanks.

Automatics use a torque converter. So that's what you'll need. bluefish (Performance Motorsports) has some for sale, do a search on "bluefish".

seems to be some confusion...all vehicles have a "flywheel". Vehicles with manual transmissions use a clutch and pressure plate that bolts to a flywheel. Automatic transmission vehicles use a torque converter that bolts to a "flexplate". A flexplate and flywheel serve the same purpose and work in the exact same manner, except that they are varied in their usage from auto and manual. hope this helps to understand a little better..if you have any questions, dont be afraid to ask(haters on these forums come and go, but sometimes it is worth it to deal with a hater or know-it-all to learn something useful).

but the flex plates job is simply to hold the starter ring gear and engine side of the torque converter. They are pretty thin already so there is not much use in "lighting" it. The torque converter is what does the job of the flywheel when it comes to adding mass to smooth out the engine.

so what is involved in bolting a manual tranny onto an otherwise automatic drivetrain/engine?

theoretically the 6m/t flywheel/pressure plate should bolt onto the vq35 block (with a 5a/t), right?

i'm looking to convert my 5a/t to a 6-speed. my tranny has almost 55k of track/touge miles, getting tired. going to swap a 6-speed with my engine rebuild.
