I thought 10w-30 was for warm weather. isn't the first number the viscosity for a cold start up so you want that to be lower if you live in area thats cold?
I have also heard that some people use 10w30 for an oil change in the summer then 5w30 for a change durring the winter.

This is True The first is number is the cold pour point VIS number. then the second is the Normal Temp VIS number the W stands for winter I dont know why but that is what they call it. The oil companies mix in whats called viscosity index improvers which allows the oil to become a 2 in 1 oil.
As for the weights its like this Flordia doesn't change. Montana can change a 100 degrees in less than 24 hours. unless your movin from 80 degrees to minus 20 don't worry about it.
In the winter you wanna keep both your numbers down slightly. so that it moves better. Winter in flordia is like a summer day in montana. Im talking bitter Azz cold stuff.
The 5w's came out for the governments sake they say we want a oil to get us better gas mileage. Oil companies response uh ok we will lighten it up a bit that should do it. What they didn't realize is that it heats up faster too which can help in aiding in wear. Friction is bad Agree yes. Im not knocking the lower weights but if you live in a climate where your above 50 move to a minimum of 10w. the warmer it gets the lesser the VIS no matter what the number. 10w 40 is great even a 10w30 is a great warm climate oil.
If you want the .0001 mile per gallon increase from the 5's go for it but unless its cold outside i prefer the 10's. I use straight weights and add in the rest to make my own concotions but for the rest id reccomend the owners manual and follow the temp guide.
if its cold use the 5 if not minmum of 10

Higher mileage engines i would agree with using a thicker oil not too thick but a little thicker over time your tolerances do change. As for the high mileage oil don't waste your time or money. you need to be over 100,000 and notice a reason to even consider using it AKA seapage etc. Essentially it has a seal conditioner package in it.
Oil companies made a fortune off of it. You could get the same results using cheap aftermarket additive.
The real kicker for me is this terrible ad from shell with our Z in it claiming 5 75 an 15k miles
There is no doubt a oil can last that long if your anaylising your oil and have good filtration or changing your filter often. But to the average Joe using the Group 3 bases this is absurd in my opinion.
and i love how they say they will guarentee it. Yeah right what give you back your 20$ bucks for the oil why your engine is destroyed.
And the part that i really cant figure out is why would they do something when they are on the top right now. They're asking their customers to buy less of their product. Blows my mind.

I would be willing to bet regular mobil 1 would easily last 10k miles... the filter however.... not so much... and why wouldn't you change your oil when you changed your filter so that 10k and 15k oil is junk.
btw the ad with the Z is the mobil 1 15k mile oil i think. I hope Z owners don't think its ok to use that stuff.

IMHO, VQ35 likes thicker 30wt oils. I acutally use M1 0W-40 in So Cal. Works great.

I ordered Motul 300V 10w-40 from performance Nissan and wow! What a difference it makes! I've been mainly using Mobil1 Synthetic (5w30 for winter, 10w30 for other season), and I used Royal Purple 5W30, Amsoil 10w30, but I couldn't feel any difference among those. Maybe I wasn't sensitive enough, but Motul made a big difference! A lot smoother rev up, and slightly throaty engine sound..
Even though $90 for 6 liters is a bit steep, hell it was worth it!
I highly recommend Motul 300V to everyone. You won't regret it.

Amsoil made it's 0w-30 to be used in vehicles that asked for 5w-30 oil and I noticed quite a differnece. This was the first oil I saw on the market (long time ago) to be marketed as an oil that was designed to last 24,000 miles or 1 year before being changed. M1 is just coming out with oil marketed that way now. I had been running M1 full synthetics in my cars since I was 16 and when they first came out they said that the oil would last 50,000 miles w/ scheduled filter changes (add whats missing). I'm not sure what changed over the years to make them go back to conventional thinking but I'm coming up on my first oil change for the Z and I haven't decided which way (brand) I'm leaning towards. Anybody running w/ a magnetic drain plug?
