Default octane booster for octane-starved states?

Aside from racing gas, is there an octane booster we of the 91-octane states can use to boost the performance of our cars? If so, please list name of product and location where it can be purchased. thanx.

inless your engine is compressed, or you have higher compression pistons, you don't need it. not only will it not help, but it may even hurt your performance. 92 or 93 octane would be fine, but going up over that will most likely hurt performance.

alcohol injection makes for an awesome affordable octane booster. also there is toulene, and race gas. mix these to get the necessary octane.

Be aware that the common octane boosters found in autoparts stores raise octane by "points".

1 "point" = .1 octane

So if you buy a bottle of booster that advertises up to 7 points of increase, remember that means you are only getting a .7 octane increase. It's important to read the fine print on the bottle.

the best solution would be XYLENE from a paint store and mix 1 part xylene to two parts gas
im not sure if its harmfull to 02 sensors

I don't know where people are getting this race gas hurts stuff at....I ran my best times ever with 3 gallons of 93 and 1 gallon of 103 in the car..

The big ECU thread states that when the ECU senses it can ease up on the timing, it will. Less knock = the ECU being more giving with power...it works, trust me.

yeah I'd be more comfortable mixing in 101-103 octane gas with 91 (or 93 if you're lucky enough to have it)

I wouldn't bother with octane boosters - they're rip offs and I've read I think that they can even damage engines to a degree if you use a lot.

more octane can only help you though - until you get to a certain point where it is no longer needed and you're in effect making it harder to ignite, but don't have enough compression/power to ignite it as fully as before. Then you start actually losing power....

wow, thanx for all your input, guys. actually, i'd be happy with an octane boost of just 2, up to 93, so we left coasters can be on a level playing field with everyone else.

The easiest way to increase your octane is to add xylene or toluene to your gas tank, perferably right before you fill your tank with gas. There are various sources on the web that tell how much to put in to get a particular octane rating, do a search on google or something.

Careful about believing pump signs as 93 ATL gas is nearer 91 [on a good day] but behaves like 93 because of out 1000 AMSL alititude [3.3% lower air density] vs sealevel.

Few other than refineries have the ability to actually check octane to a fine degree.........most state labs can differentiate regular from premium for price gouging [selling reg as premium] but that's about it. Is it 93 or 91 [only the maker knows] and that was when it left the refinery not a few days [week] later in your tank.

The dynamic range of the knock sensors [ignition timing back off] can allow 87 octane to function and allow power gains from 103, if the BTU content is similar.

Having a higher octane with ethanol is not ideal since the timing is advanced but the BMEP is low........why oxygenates produce less power [less BMEP] than conventional non oxygenated blends.
