Auto Tranny POwer Handling
Hey how u all doin? I called the guys at Turbonetics for info. on their single turbo kit and a tech told me it wasn't recommended because of power handling limitations of the automatic tranny. Anybody else know if it's true? Stillen has this new upgrade for it http://www.stillen.com/Sportscars_de...d=47326&page=1 any thoughts?
Several FI makers (Vortech, Stillen, etc.) do not make a blower kit for the AT cars. There must be a reason......note that the Stillen valve body kit does not mention that it keeps the trans from breaking, just that it will "increase the power handling ability of the trans", whatever that means. I'd love to put a Stillen blower on my Z - I have two other FI vehicles now - but not with that AT....
I dont see the problem, just long term problems down the road im running my ati procharged on the 5at and my friend is currently running his vortech unit on his 5at, we haven't had any problems what so ever, just a longer lag between shifts, we both are pushing over 370-405whp and the tranny is still holding up, even under extreme loads and runs. The valve body is very beneficial, i would imagine for even n/a applications...

I have the Level Ten torque converter and valve body upgrade installed and it is quite nice for NA and I was told by Level Ten that these upgrades would allow the tranny to support 600rwhp from their testing. I have found thus far that a tranny cooler isn't actually necessary, but if I went FI, I would add one for sure. The tranny fluid does currently run through the stock radiator to help cool the fluid, so one way of knowing whether a tranny cooler is needed is to watch for an increase in temp on the general cooling system gauge.

JATCO [oem manufacturer] specs the 5AT used in Q45/M45/ G35 at 333 lb/ft max peak [ocasionally] not every shift is WOT...........340 HP at 6300 rpm = 284 lb/ft...........15% safety factor delivers the 100,000 mile plus life. 380HP at 6300 would be 100% of rating so guessimate that life might be reduced by 3/4 [at least].
Transmissions just expendible $4500 [rebuilds] replacement items when you exceed oem power often or by much.
