Default Need help-clutch/flywheel or 3.9 final drive

I have been doing some research lately and decided that bolt ons aren't the way I really want to go right now, due to the high amount of money for relatively small horsepower gains. So, after hearing great reviews on both the upgraded clutch/flywheel and 3.9 final drive I have come down to deciding between one or the other. My funds will not allow me to purchase both. Any suggestions?? Also, if I go with clutch/flywheel, what is the best setup for me........ I know the Tilton is the fastest and lightest, but i hear driveability is much more difficult and it is a bit pricey. I am looking for something in the middle with great gains for a good price. Thanks for the help.

Standard Response #37: Get the JWT clutch / flywheel, it's a good middle-of-the-road choice and well priced.

I'd say get the 3.9 before the clutch/flywheel, but you'll want to buy the assembled pumpkin with a better LSD which might be outside of your current price range.

hope this helps

I don't have any experience with the 3.9, but I do have the JWT Flywheel and Clutch combo. Its well priced ($810 for both, and you might get it cheaper from a vendor on here), and it is very driveable. It revs about twice as fast as stock, and the engagement point on the clutch is a little shorter. It definantly made a difference on the car.

If you got any specific questions on the JWT setup feel free to ask.

FYI:

JWT saves 28lb over stock. I've not heard many complaints.
Tilton saves 40lb over stock. Seems some don't like the pedal.

I'm also torn. I don't mind JWT, but the Tilton looks pretty good. I've yet to hear any specs on the Exedy or ORC units.

JWT is a great mod. I got my combo from Avalon Racing for $725. Very happy with it.

If you are thinking about the Tilton I would suggest you do some research on the board.

the info on the board is skewed a bit IMHO.

Best to find someone with a Tilton in your area. That way you'll know if you hate it or love it like every one seems to.

I dunno about being skewed or not but there is a great thread somewhere on here that gives a lot of feedback regarding the Tilton setups. I know that not everyone loves it . More importantly they wont handle FI if you should ever decide to go that way.

yeah there def. was a great couple posts. That much is for sure.. but it seems though people hate it.. and I'm not sure if those people are hating it b/c it's not a stock feel.. or b/c it's no good.

Then there are the few that love it..

MOST important as you say, is the FI trigger. I completely agree with you there.

EXEDY
i believe the fw is 9lb? with a cerametallic or carbon disc?? Would be much more friendly than what the tilton "reviewers" are saying.. but $1800

Whoa that Exedy is in the ATS price range. I have driven the ATS Carbon and it is not bad. Very driveable and has "cool factor" but its very pricey. For the money I'd go JWT all the way.

725 sounds like a great price, did you do the install yourself?

I would go for the 3.9 FD, I guess consider me biased, I think you'll get a bigger performance gain from the 3.9 versus the clutch/flywheel, why not wait until the stock clutch is worn out to upgrade it? If you plan to stay N/A I am convinced the 3.9 FD is the best mod you can do on a N/A car.

All said and done between parts and labor my 3.9 FD was $1600 installed

Go with the Final Drive. The other two will void your warranty if you have one. The final drive is untraceable unless they drive your car and see you speedometer is a little off, that might clue in the technician if he is halfway intellegent. Flywheels/clutch= bye warranty. With final drive I feel like I have a 400HP car.
