Sr20det Into A 350z
Hey, i found a shop that can do the swap and it's pretty cheap. what do you guys think of the realiable of the car and do you think cops would be able to tell it had a sr20det in it?

seemed to work in Forsburg's drift car. if that isn't a sign of reliability, i don't know what is. but anything you do from turbo/ic piping to exhaust has to be all custom since there are no kits designed for the underhood space of the z. that might make upgrading the performance cost more than going f/i in the long run. plus, you will feel a big loss in torque. that motor is more for high revs and hp.

the price of the swap is 3500.00 that includes the intercooler, motor mounts, transmission mounts, drive shaft, down pipe, exhaust and raidator. I already have a sr20det out of a S14. it seems cheaper then droping in a twinturbo kit or supercharger.

i believe topics ii did that swap because there was no aftermarket for the vq yet, and he had been comfortable using sr20s in his other cars. it isn't a very reliable motor in the z, as you have to push it way past stock #s to get it to move the big z around with any speed. chris went through quite a few sr motors in the z last year, and went on to drive a much lighter s15 when given the chance.
it will NOT be cheap by the time you are done, unless your happy with no gauges working, far less power than the stock vq, and poor installation. its going to cost you probably at least 10k plus just to get the motor in the car and producing more as much power as the vq motor.
if your want to be super jdm, and end up with something that will have enough torque when driving around town to be fun, put in an rb26 or rb25. however, even with these swaps, its hard to beat the vq motor. the vq motor stock will put out about as much as an sr20 will stock ( people dyno queen the sr20 pretty high, but i don't think too many people get alot of reliable time out of a stock sr20 at 500whp ), and have alot more off boost power.
in short, the sr20 would be pretty cool in a stripped out lightweight z like chris's, since he will spend alot of time at redline extracting all the peak hp available from the engine. it won't be super reliable, but thats ok, their cheap. an sr20 in a street driven car would suck ***, as the thing would be pretty slow unless you use a decently sized turbo, which would mean you have a low compression 2 liter trying to drag around a 3000 pound car off boost.

thats exatly how I feel on the SR20 swap subject as well Aaron. I think if anyone wants to do a swap just get a RB25. But in all reality, I dont think it would be anymore reliable than the VQ. Both have been known to need better internals around 400-450rwhp. Im looking to extract more power out of my car, but I'm kinda scared to go F/i since most of my track time is spent drifting. So, Im really only looking for something around 350-400 rwhp. So, Im either thinking about getting a single turbo or possibly a S/c. But, Im probably going to wait and see how these single turbo kits do on other Z's for a while before I dip in. Plus there is plenty of more suspension modding that needs to be done on my car!

i love the sr20det used it, been around i,t but...... sr20det215-225hp stock.. vq 287hp stock. You would save lots of weight but not enough to make up the diff. Basically for 450hp+ your rebuilding them both. FOr 400hp- they both work but only one was made for the car.

Don't forget the weight though, the SR20 will shave just over 200 pounds off the front of the car, where it is the heaviest. the VQ is a pig, only 40lbs lighter than the LS1 in last year's C5 vette. This won't make up for the reduction in power when you look at a stock DET vs a stock VQ35, but the handling benefits will be really something. On a base Z, you would have a curb weight down to about 2950 lbs. The SR20 is easily upgradable and reliable for 320-330 whp. You'd have to boost the VQ to do that and would only be adding weight to do it. Plus, you could sell the VQ motor, tranny and driveshaft, with all the peripherals and accessories. I doubt the shop would be able to do the swap well, with a custom driveshaft and wiring harness issues, for the price you're quoting though. It is a very interesting idea.

SR is a great motor... Light, Strong, can be very powerfull...
That price, will probably get you to the HP of a 350z w/ a weight reduction on the front end...
YOu will have to do a little more work to get more power out of the SR... But, it is easy... That is IF they are getting you a good motor!
Is it an S13 / S14 / S15 SR20DET? What turbo? Has it been rebuilt?
I can get you a new long block SR... I can also get you an RB26DETT... This is where the real power is...
