the only real reason I'd be interested in the new engine that the old engine does not have the capability of being upgraded to is is for the VTC and that's only going to give you a few hp

you'd still need a standalone to manage it because the stock 2003-2004 ECU won't do it

It would be insanly expensive and not cost effective

Performance nissan sells brand new engines
http://performancenissanparts.com/ca...1135_1136_1133

It would cost $11000-14000 to buy the new engine, take out the old engine, put in the new engine, put in a standalone EMS, and get the thing tuned

IMO don't even think of wasting money like that for 13hp and less torque. Spend the money upgrading the rods and pistons, getting some more aggressive cams and headwork and an Emanage Ultimate if you're JUST interested in upgrading the engine. If you're interested in going faster, I'd skip all that and just buy a FI kit with a good safe tune.

If you're really really really interested in that 300hp engine. Trade in your 2003 for it. IMO I still wouldn't bother

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask this, but I was curious. If you were to go FI and keep the engine stock, would the 300hp engine be a better choice?

yes - stronger rods. They're not bombproof like pauter rods, but still better than the previous engine

I'd be careful taking FI car up to 7200 all the time though, but maybe it would be ok?

7000 redline, not 7200

300 hp @ 6,400 rpm
7000 rpm redline

lots of places, try forgedinternals.com or Z1 automotive http://z1auto.com/submodel.asp?model=350z&cat=engine

if you're doing rods, you might as well do pistons too. And actually SGP racing does small block build ups - with ceramic piston coatings. They have a lot of experience with the Z.

You're looking at spending like $5000-6500 to do this stuff though...for parts, labor, reassembling the engine, then putting the engine back in the car, shipping the block, etc
