how hard is it to get to the spark plugs

Default how hard is it to get to the spark plugs

Is it difficult to change out the spark plugs on the Z, it seems like there alot of stuff in the way

pretty easy, really. just have to unscrew those two screws on each side, remove the rubber thingy, and then unscrew the plug. might have to remove intake tube, iirc.

make sure use a spark plug tool...

i was thinking about changing mines, what would be the best plugs to get ?

am going with Denso Iridium plugs, have a great history with them on my past cars

This thread needs more details..

Is the Plenum in the way? What else is in the way?

Is a flex head wrench needed?

yeeh it does...and the plenum seems to be in the way along with a whole bunch of other stuff...can anyone give a little more insight...

i saw it done the other day. he removed only the intake tube. used extended socket to remove small screws on each side of plug, and extended spark plug remover to remove plug. did not remove plenum.

Absolutely correct - just the intake tube is in the way. Of-course, you will need to release the coil pack on top of each plug to get access to the plug itself... On a related note, unless you want to change the heat range, the stock plugs are good for about 100k mi, and you won't see any difference in mileage or performance going to iridium, but have a good time anyway.

I just changed my plugs on my perfectly tuned NA Z because the grounding strap on cylinder # 5 melted to the electrode at the track(1/4) causing a misfire, and essentially running on 5 cylinders.

The drivers side is easy just move the intake out of the way-I just unbolted the pop-charger to access the coil packs and then the plugs. On cylinder #6 (drivers rear) there is also a bracket you have to move to access the plug, no biggie just a 10mm bolt.

On the passenger side, my engine wiring harness was ziptied from the factory right on top of where the coil packs needed to come out. I just cut the zip tie so I could move the harness some to allow me to pull the coil packs out. On cylinder #3, which is the middle one, you have to remove a bracket sitting on top of the coil pack to get to the plug. Again no biggie just a 10mm bolt, same size as the coil pack bolts. Besides that they are all relatively easy to get to, you just have to do a lot of manuevering cuz it is pretty tight.

It took me 1 hour to change plugs and in between do a compression test on my car my first time. Next time now that Ive cut the harness from the zipties and know what Im doing I could probobly do it in 35-45 minutes.

BTW Nissan says our spark plugs are good for 105,000 miles, mine at 53K looked like they had been to hell and back(with one serious failure), they looked awful, and my A/F is a perfect 13:1....so you guys with 40K or more miles pull them and take a look.

thanks everybody I replaced the stocks today with iridiums and the stock plugs looked more than ready to retire...the car runs great now IT WAS the plugs causing the sluggish performance from the other thread I posted...appreciate all the info....

Good to hear, my car also seems to be running much better with a change of plugs. Did you stay with the stock heat range iridiums or go 1 step colder? Also how many miles did your plugs have?

I got these exact plugs right here,^^^ I only had 25k on mine..I have an 03 touring...I guess it all depends on how hard you drive the car, not to sure why mine got crappy so soon. One of the plugs looked especially bad! But everything seems cool now...how many miles did you have on your??

I say to hell with what Nissan recommends. My car has 30K miles and I am changing them out to NGK Iridium this weekend.

Thanks for the info on what has to be moved out of the way in order to make the change.

I've heard that one step colder plugs can benefit NA's applications.

Can anyone provide more detail on how this is the case?
