Default Almost have the Quaife LSD install finished

For those of you that have the Quaife LSD.

Took the houseing and diff to get the bearings and seals pressed in. I swaped housings with a friend who has an auto. The entire fitment issue seemed to be centerd on the fact that the 3.3 ring gear is 10mm thicker then the 3.5 and 3.9(350evo) ring gears. Quaife modeled the LSD after with a pumpkin out of an auto with the base open diff and not after a pumpkin with 3.5 gears.

Anyways with the 3.3 gears it looks like everything will work. Ill know for sure on wednesday when I get a chance to go pick it up after the bearings and seals are pressed.

good to know! I'm ordering a 3.3 ring gear myself! I want more time in the gears.

So looks like this is confirmation that Quaife modeled the lsd after an auto with a base open diff. And to my understanding, there is no such thing as a 350Z with an auto and open diff so they must have modeled it off of a G35. They definitely dropped the ball on this one. Still waiting to get my corrected bolts.

When I tried to get the ball rolling on this product, I did mention to them on the phone how auto and MT diff's differ, because as your all seeing it matters. Quaife no doubt knows what they are doing concerning mockup so they can only be held accountable for what they are handed. I warned early on that they needed to be sent a MT VLSD diff assembly. Now they are having to R&D a solution that really wasn't of their own creation, they simply copied what was handed to them.

That's odd. I sent them a MT VLSD diff. from a Track model 350Z, that they kept for almost 4 months........

Guess they are too smart to have bothered looking at it.

Once more, into the breach...

I received my new 13mm bolts today. I guess it's time for install attempt #2 now. Wish me luck.

Really? I haven't heard anything regarding mine yet...I thought they were going to complete a full assembly and let everyone know once they successfully completed that step before sending out the new bolts.

I want to wait until someone mages to successfully install this before I go to the dealer for the install...I only have one set of replacement bearings, and I don't want to waste them on a failed install.

I know. I was surprised to see the 13mm bolts arrive without fanfare today. They were packed with a padded envelope and a prepaid FedEX package for returning the original 12mm bolts and washers to Quaife USA.

I'm a little gun-shy. When I tried to have the Quaife installed the first time, my mechanic at the local Inifiniti dealership spotted the fitment problem right away. (The shelf height, of course, is off by 10mm.) Of course, he had to remove the OEM differential to notice the difference. This was an expensive exercise in futility.

I have a 2003 5AT G35s. I have asked repeatedly, and my dealer has assured me repeatedly, my OEM differential is an open differential. The dealership has told me I absolutely DO NOT have a VLSD. The thing is, Quaife theorizes the reason their ATB Differential did not fit my application is because my OEM differential MUST BE a VLSD! After all, they designed the darn thing to fit a 5AT OEM OPEN DIFF application. Well, it did not fit!

If my OEM differential is, indeed, a VLSD, then the dealership has been wrong all along. It means they must not know the difference between an open diff and a VLSD. They had the OEM unit out of the case and on a bench next to the Quaife unit, so they had a real good look at it. If my OEM unit is, indeed, a VLSD, my dealership would be guilty of committing a major malfunction. Also, if I do indeed have a VLSD unit, that means the Quaife will not fit my application without stub axles from an OEM open diff. That's another $300!

Sweet Jesus, O what anguish! I'm gripped with indecision, and nearly unable to move. I don't know whether to proceed with install #2, or just send the whole shootin' match back.

I would question your dealer then, b/c the only way it could be off by 10mm is if you have the VLSD with 3.5 gears.

Maybe a drivetrain expert would recognize whether you had a VLSD by the color/texture of a sample of the gear oil? That might be easy to sample without spending a bunch of money tearing down everything. Also, maybe you could put the car on a lift and give some power to the wheels to see what happens (or do a burnout and count the tracks left).

You have the base model Z? And it's still off even with the spacer?

Well then,.....what the,......how the,..... how could they of ended up mocking to AT diff specs from a MT diff? A MT VLSD diff does not have equal length stub axles. Pretty strange

bullseye: To my knowledge no '03 sedans, wether AT or MT got a VLSD. All of them had open diffs. The Quaife should be a drop in for your car! You really need to find out what your OEM diff is. Or maybe we are still missing a piece of the puzzle.

Then he must have 3.5 gears, because the ring gear is 10mm thicker.

Got everything back and IT WILL WORK.

The housing is out of an auto G35 coupe and had an open diff and 3.3 gears.

The only thing i need are some shims to get the backlash of the gears in spec. I thought i might be lucky and have the original shims keep it in spec. Ill put up a review in a couple weeks when the car will be running hopefully.

I just opened my package from Quaife: 10 bolts, no washers. Anyone else get shorted? Do I need them????

This is not funny anymore.

Do you have the washers from the first set of bolts they sent out?
