Thumbs up Hi Flow Cat in the works!!!!

I got confirmation from Random Technology, manufacturers of high flow cats, that they in the process of getting a prototype ready for mid January for the 350Z!!!

This should make some HP, similar to the Top Secret Y-pipe, in their test results they have a 1995 Maxima with cat back system and had an increase of 14.4 HP and 16 TQ, tha is almost 10% increase, with the High flow cats and a cat back we could see the 20HP increase!!!! Now we are talking!!!

That would indeed be a very worthwhile mod. Not sure if the Random Cat has a very pleasing sound though. We tried it on an SE-R and the results were not terribly pleasing, although the car had no muffler. Just an FYI.

just a comment, but it is illegal to to replace a cat with less than 50000miles on a car. now I am not sure how this is enforced, at emmisions testing they can do a visual inspection; tho its still there so how would they tell its not the origonal cat. anyway, yeah, any ideas about this?

I don't think they can tell, and specially if it passes emmissions. We don't have to worry here in Florida as they did away with the testing but I guess if someone is worried enough they could remove and install original as it should be a straight bolt on thing, they said it would be a y-pipe. The thing is that since it is a y-pipe and it will replace 2 cats the price wont be cheap, would be my guess.

IT is legal to replace it, but only if the original is damaged. The law doesn't specify how the damage occured, like maybe a screwdriver through it?

Latest update is that they have the prototypes and should have dyno's within two weeks, estimated price is around 325, I assumed that was each cat but not sure.

I think that' the price for ONE cat...

also, how's anyone going to know if you change the cat? so it doesn't matter if it's illegal or not....

ex: last car I had has no cat, just straight pipe, since it was turbocharged... it passed the emission and they didn't even know it's not there, so....

Dougracezs has already replaced the dual cat system with one high flow cat on each side. He did not throw any codes. I dove the car and it was very quick. It definitely frees some horses up (mind you this was with his custom headers). He has not dynoed it since adding the cats but we are guessing another 5-10 HP in addition to the 15 from the headers.

If you want to keep it stock, just gut the second cat. The O2 sensor is before it anyway so no fear of throwing codes.

Did he modify a set to fit the Z or is there a Z high flow cat already out.

Sorry I did not clarify, he built his own set. He estimated $500 for a set. (2 cats, 4 flanges, custom tube with 02 bungs, and labor) I just wanted to let you guys know they are worth it if you can do it in accordance to your local emissions standards.

Just make sure whatever you put on there to keep it as close to stock design as possible. The cats need to reach certain temps to work in order to pass emissions and not throw any codes.

Default $500

I will order them right now if they add 5-10rwhp and dont throw any codes. I would like to see the dynos with the HFC on the car. I know the headers added like 8 peak RWHP so lets see what the charts look like for the high flow cats.

Are the internals ceramic or platinum? With turbo charging in mind, I would much rather a platinum catalyst to keep the EGT's down.
