When the cam sensor goes bad, it takes in oil and passes it into the harness so that there is a film of oil between the contacts of the harness and the cam sensor. If the sealed casing from the sensor is cracked, it my have leaked oil in it. It is not normal for oil to be in the unit. Make sure that whoever replaces the sensor cleans the electrical harness connected to cam sensor with electrical cleaner. You may notice brown liquid coming out, thats the oil in the electrical unit that causes the problem even though you have a new sensor. If you dont clean the harness so the film remains, a bad connection will still exist.

^ you are right, but to be on the safe side when replacing the sensor, I was just suggesting to clean out the harness to make sure there in no oil in it. Some mechanics will not do this step and the problem will still exist.

I have this problem and I have an early model 2003. VIN number is under 12,000. Do you think this recall will still apply to me? I hate dealerships though...almost want to just buy the parts myself and do it...but that would also be a waste of money.

Dealership said my 9/03 production 04' was not covered under the recall. Funny thing is that the tech who greeted me - and attempted to help me - said he knew nothing about any 03' sensor recall. I informed him the recall number, and reiterated that 630,000 03' Nissan vehicles were recalled, and promptly asked for a senior technician.
We got the right part, and after wrestling with the clip on the sensor for a while, all is good now.

I'm having an issue with this now, and I have an 03 Z that was pre-ordered aka an early produced model. I called that number listed in the thread for Nissan, North America, but the lady said that I am not covered. Is there anywhere else I can check or get some documentation? I have my car at the dealer right now and I'm sure they're just gonna hose me if I don't have any information to back up my claims of a recall.

Labor should be around $250 including a reflash of your ECU. I got my crank sensor replaced (different location...so might be cheaper for me) and that's what I paid not including parts. Total for me was $340.
When I got my car back though...it would die during a hot start and also the rev's would come down too low while driving when I'd put the clutch in. I had to take it back and get my idle reset. The car drives perfect now.

I tried to find a definitive range for the affected Z's. Is it VIN's ending in 000001 to 100167? If that's the case, I'm off by 2,000... I'm going to bring this up with the dealer when I head over there. They're charging me $460.00.

I am having this exact issue right now. Bought my 2003 a month ago and just got the extended warranty transferred to my name today. I will be going to the dealer today. We will see what happens (crossing fingers).

I just got this code too P0340... I bought my Z used though, is there any way to find out if this recall was already performed? Anyone who went recently have this recall honored? I'm nervous because of my s/c set up. Is the car safe to drive before this is fixed?
