Default Some future mod questions (are these possible?)

Asking dumb questions again. Please keep in mind I drove highly modified LS1- F-Bods for years and this is my first import. (Thanks.)

The best bang for buck mod for us who drove automatics was called a High Stall Torque Converter, mine was a Yank 3200.
edit link

better link to FAQ

For 500 bucks it took a full half second off my 1/4! It also roasted tires whenever you wanted it too. Vig also makes good ones for less. We put B&M tranny coolers on them for like 35 bucks each.

Is this a possible mod for my Z? What is the current stall on the Z's TC (Torque Converter) and what brand/website should I be looking at?

Dumb question #2.
Another popular mod was better spark plugs with more spark. I understand our Z's do not have plug wires (still can't get over that lol) is better spark plugs an option?

In the LS1's they are running NGK TR55's they are only 2 bucks each but I saw a good read on some new Bosche plugs triple called Platinum +4's.

Is upgrading our plugs (if we have them lol) a good mod. If so what plug produces the most spark and our readers here gonna upgrade them? I know we can get more power out of this beast somehow why we wait for this "ECU."

That's it for now, thanks in advance.

Torque converters: probably only www.levelten.com can make one
spark plugs: the best you can upgrade to is iridium plugs, such as Denso

Default Thanks much

Looking into the link
NGK makes the Iradium plugs too. Is Denso the best? Never heard of them.

I'll check my manual for gap etc.

Found this at their site Torque Converters

Still trying to find their application guide, may have to call them.

Anyone know what the STR or stall is on the 03 Z A5T TC stock?

How about this mod, a fuel cool can like Moroso Super Cool Can? It's basically a cooler for the incoming fuel before it hits the jets. I remember using them on our old-school dual carb toy's and vws. We had homemade ones out of old fire extinguishers and PVC pipes with coils of copper tubing that the fuel ran through. We filled the cans with ice to lower the fuel temp. Funny thing though, our intakes got the cold treatment also, so we had to adjust our jetting for the richer mixture. Junkyard intercoolers. Ahh, memories...

Speaking of cooling fuel, that reminded me of something I found when surfing the other day. Anybody familiar with this? It is supposed to cool the intake air by having the air flow over a CO2 cooled bulb as it goes into the intake.

Seems interesting, and it won a SEMA award apparently (see the top of the page).

Not sure how much power it is supposed to make, or how much of a drop in intake temps it would really give. Might be snake oil for all I know. I've never seen anything like it, though.

Default Sound like snake oil to me

But who knows?

The placement of the CAI's I am seeing is as cold a place for air you can get. It's awesome really when you look at some other cars intakes and where they get their cold air from.

Like GM for example, they might need this Kryton Bulb but I wouldn't invest in it. People out there want our money and will sell anything like this

Vortex Generator

It spins your air for you for 69.00 bucks and adds 35 % HP!

Thanks for the tip on Level 10, they don't stock anything for our 03's anyway as far as tranny stuff (at least that I saw.)

That Tornado thing only works on certain cars, mostly trucks and SUVs, some it has no effect.

The Tornado thing is such a joke.

The CO2 cooler isn't like a CAI, and in fact, if it worked, it would cool the air even more so would work together with one. Totally different thing than a CAI.

I just don't see how a bulb of very cold metal would cool the volume of air flowing into an intake enough to matter. I thought it interesting enough to watch to see if anybody can prove decent HP gains with it, but not interesting enough to get any hopes up

If it did truly drop temps 35% at the intake, it might be worth it. I would assume this is something you just turn on when you need it, kind of similar in use to NOS. That wouldn't be an all the time thing, since you have a finite amount of CO2 in the tank. I also think if you were wanting some kind of push button power boost, NOS probably makes more sense.

Not my thing, just interesting.

Default I agree it's very interesting

But I was wondering about the AIT (Air Intake Sensor and MAF, computer etc and what effect this light bulb would have after these sensors adjusted to the light being on so to speak.

Who knows,

I will await someone elses verdict. Like you said for on/off switch Nitrous is ideal.

Really? I've heard only good things about them.

Well ... perhaps I should state that with some more info. Back when I was looking through my Eclipse club all the time (www.eclipseforums.org), a few folks had purchased the Level10 converters and shift kits and were very pleased with them. I haven't followed any posts related to that in maybe 6 months, so things may have happened with them.

I've heard a few other people mention their company as well. Haven't heard anything negative as of yet. Well ... until now.

If you're not comfortable purchasing a torque converter over the net, you can always try to find a local shop that deals with this (some tranny shops have experience with this, make sure you do your research first, though!). I have a shop here that I've heard nothing but good things about. They only service local folks though, I'm thinking about taking my Prelude in for a new torque converter sometime in the next year.

Default Good idea on local

Thanks,

Good to hear it's a viable option for my car too because it's a GREAT mod for auto's!

I will be 13.5 for sure with a new TC.

Yeah, it's good for any automatic, whether domestic or import. Losing less power through your torque converter is good all around!

I think on the Eclipse ('00+), the Level10 converter recovered approximately 25WHP - 30WHP! Admittedly, the 3G Eclipses aren't the best platform to start with ... but it is impressive none-the-less!

The important thing is to find a reputable shop if you're serious about that. I'd definitely take a peek into Level10's reputation, based on VQ's comments and a few others! I imagine if done improperly, you could really muck up your car on that one.

From what I've heard and read, if your shop's not going to do the actual TC work for you (I guess some (if not all??) shops just modify your TC), then I believe you have to have it removed, shipped to a place, updated and then sent back.

At least, that's how Level10 (and some other company I can't remember right now) work.

Might want to check from a more knowledgable source, though. I'm just going off of memory from ... 6 or more months ago?

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Default Hope Not

Yank sent me one out for cost and I sold my stock one.
Don't want any down time in my Z, that brings my wife into the mod picture again don't wanna go there, I prefer to do my mods while she is at work and I am off

It's like a 2.5, 3 hour job and needs a lift.

Thanks!

Awesome!

If you can get any pics of the installation, that'd be cool for those that are interested!

I'd be curious for when I do it to my Prelude. My Z is going to be a manual, though (when it finally gets here). Yay, I get to learn to drive a stick finally!

Default Hi, my last post was a little unclear

Yank sold me my previuos 3200 Stealth Thruster Torque Converter without a core or rebuild and I sold the stock TC from my FireHawk. Yank makes GM F-Bod TC's I don't think they mess with imports. Another popular brand is Vigilante or "Vig" as they call them.

I haven't found a TC Dealer yet I was just telling the other poster that I am hoping to find a similiar type dealer so I can avoid the spouse delete mod, cause she would kill me.
