can 5 grand take my z to the 12's?
In about a year after all this talk of superchargers/turbos come out who here thinks it will take my z to the 12's (high 12's). I would think it would take about a 1/2 to 1 second off the quarter but I have no clue. So, with 5 grand, how fast can I make my z (its a base)?

Hmm... with a decent set of slicks, maybe some performance rear gears, a fairly large shot of nitrous, extra fuel and perhaps some reworked internals (to handle said nitrous) and you can probably hit high 12s. If not, at least you'll go up in a blaze of glory.

I bet a 70 shot of nitrous and slicks would get a good shifter there. LSD might help, and youd still have maybe 2 grand to burn. a turbo would be difficult for 5grand, itll probably cost more than that, and you still have to install it.
but in one case you have tires you cant really use, and a increase that wont take effect off the strip.
like Ive said before, if you want 12s, you bought the wrong car. we make fun of civics for trying to go fast, and mustangs/firebirds make fun of us for trying to do the quarter mile. its not what it was meant to do, sure a pair of pliers can turn a nut, but a wrench would do the job much more efficiently.

11's?! that sounds real nice. I know, I know, the z's intent isn't for drag racing I just want to set a realistic goal. I bought the car and am very satisfied. I think I could hit 12.90's with nos and slicks and superior driving skills (working on that).

Umm, with a 100 shot, you better not have any trouble hitting 12's even with **** poor driving skills. And slapping on slicks, with even a low boost turbo (5 or 6 psi) would get you there no problem. (with the usual intake, and exhaust mods of course) 5 grand would hook you up just fine with the hardware, but labor to install would bump it a bit higher than that (plan on as much as $1000 for labor). You could do the intake, and exhaust mods yourself (minus headers), but the turbo you'd definitely want to have done professionally.

HP increase depends how much they bored it, but doing that is an expensive, risky thing to do to an engine. Anytime you start messing with internals, you're leaving the realm of recreational car modification, and getting into serious stuff. You'd need new pistons, rings, gaskets, sleeves. It'd also be a good idea to go with forged titanium pistons, and rods to handle the extra force. Boring out the cylinders is a surefire way to gain power. The more air/fuel you can fit in there the more power, but like I said, doing something like that is a big job. Would cost multiple thousands of dollars. All I'm planning on doing to my Z is intake, exhaust, and turbo (and everything associated with that, like clutch, etc.) That'll give me all the juice I'll ever need.

I'd say $5k, plus whatever you pay for labor, is pretty realistic for a turbo, depending on what the kit includes. I mean, if it's a complete kit...turbo w/ either manifold or manifold adapter, intake piping with filter, intercooler with piping that goes all the way to the throttle body, and the big killer FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM to include injectors, fuel pump, EGT, and A/F ratio controller....... Well, to me that adds up to $5k. Of course the initial kits will cost alot but the price will go down eventually....I hope . With Greddy's turbo...12's maybe high 11's seem realistic with race gas and wide back tires or slicks. But remember, fuel management is everything, if your car isn't tuned properly......bad things happen. As for boring engines...N/A tuning is left up to the pros. I would have to find a very reputable place to do that...N/A tuning is a complicated science filled with small tolerances and precision machining among other things.

sound very interesting, I've just hit 500 miles and the engine sounds better; and I've especially noticed an increase in power. Passing cars is so effortless (I was previously driving a pos). I can't wait for modding to begin. My two goals are the sound of the car (sounds a little weak now), and getting the most hp for the dollar. A turbo on our 350's will just be killer!!! we'll take out the new turbo fugly neons
