you can get hose covers, here is an example

i am not a big fan of steel braiding on heater hoses, could lead to a more costly component blowing rather than the hose.

Braid covers also rub the paint off anything they touch. They are hard to get smooth around bends and collect dirt. If the hose did not come with the braid already on it (brake lines, etc.), it's rice.

Regular pant will just crack and flake off.

just tell me your not for real with the paint? just leave them the way they are or buy some new ones in the color you like. do not just paint them.
