Default Weird noise at 80mph and above

Hey guys,

I am hearing a weird noise at speeds 80+mph. It sounds like a humming or whistling noise. I know its not the transmission because I put it into neutral and it didnt go away. I noticed it did go away once I decreased my speed below 80mph. Anyone have an idea?

Might be a bearing going bad.

I had something similar, it was from about 45 - 75 mph. Replaced the left front wheel bearing(I had hit a curb) and it went away. I actually thought it was some tire noise, but it made a droning noise.

When Nissan replaced my tranny, they left one plastic snap off of a plasic shield. At high speed, it vibrated.

Jack it up and look for loose plastic pieces underneath or in the wheel wells.

Tires feathering, wearing out unevenly? Check the front tires, sounds like it to me. At first I thought your diff was whining but if you put the car in neutral and it stayed its not that...

Its a 06 with 3300 miles, I put new g35coupe wheels and brand new rubber on 500 miles ago. I'm sure its not feathering but i'd like to really figure out what it is. Its either the rear diff or bearings.

Question

Maybe they didn't mount the tires in the correct rotation or worse put a rear tire up front with a front tire?

It isnt mounting or rotation because the noise came 500 miles after I put wheels and tires. If it was a mounting and rotation problem i'm sure I would have heard it when I first took it out. Plus I checked all the wheels and tires and they are installed correctly.

Is it mechanical noise or is it like wind creeping in thru holes?

Its mechanical for sure. Its a weird humming, rotational noise. I really think its my diff. I'll have nissan check it out when I take it in for a trans replacement this week.

I have a whining noise from my diff at about that speed. If i let go of the gas it will stop, but if I hold the gas at around 80mph it will whine the whole way. Im not really concerned about it though. Should i be?

I had a very similar noise (howling) in my 2004 G35 tranny even when the clutch was pushed in. Neutral didn't make a difference. They said it was some type of brass thrust bearing going out. Dealership replaced the tranny and the noise is gone, but I don't like the new tranny. Shifting is chunky and somehow... not symmetrical.

Sorry to hear you are having problems like this so early in such a new car.

Unfortunatly, its a roll of the dice that seem a little too common.

The MREV makes up for it though!

Bingo - I'll bet it's your diff. If the backlash on the shims is loose, it'll make the sound you're describing. The diff will run cooler that way however. I had it set up that way with my 350evo 3.9 install.

The backlash on a stock diff would be out of specs? I hope not, lol . It started recently, its very weird but i'm sure its my diff.

My old diff was howling, like a wooo wooo woooo at about 80 when there is no throttle applied, with your mileage it would seem not likely but the symptoms you have seem like that is your diff.
